Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Penny for Your Memories by Dexter Johnson is an absolute gem of a sci-fi thriller that grabbed me from page one and didn’t let go. Set in the year 2160, it introduces a future where memories arenโ€™t just personal anymoreโ€”theyโ€™re commodities to be consumed, shared, and even sold. EchoTechโ€™s ingenious devices make it possible to dive into other people’s recollections, and this fascinating premise alone was enough to hook me.

The protagonist, Brendan, is a regular user of EchoTech’s EchoVisor, comfortably lost in the memories of others. But when his seemingly routine life takes a dark turn, the story unfolds into a gripping journey of secrets, conspiracies, and mind-bending revelations. Brendanโ€™s transformation from a passive observer to someone actively questioning his reality is beautifully paced and layered with emotional depth. His struggles felt quiet relatable, even amidst the futuristic backdrop.

What I absolutely loved about this book is how it brilliantly blended the plot twists with thought-provoking questions. What does it mean to truly live? How do we define reality in a world dominated by manufactured experiences? Author Johnson doesnโ€™t just craft an exciting story; he forces one to think long after the book is over.

The world-building is incredibly immersive, from the sleek, futuristic gadgets to the eerie consequences of a society built on memory manipulation. Author Johnson’s writing is simple yet cinematicโ€”I could see every detail as if I were wearing an EchoVisor myself!

If youโ€™re a fan of speculative fiction that challenges your perception of reality while delivering edge-of-your-seat thrills, Penny for Your Memories is a must-read!

Book Review: Night of the Fisherman by David Morabito

An emotionally confused teenage boy, known as Fish, living in a lackluster 1950’s suburban setting is accustomed to the anguish of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Nicknamed the Fisherman, he seemingly is always having to fish around for a reason for his miserable existence. He is then forced to face his worst fears confronting an abusive authority figure in the neighborhood known as Poppa. To compound his anguish, he endures the mistreatment while pursuing the love of Kara, a beautiful but garrulous neighbor girl, who is drawn into the conflict.

In the course of the conflict, they are transported to an alien realm which appears to be a beautiful peaceful setting but soon becomes “anything but” when Poppa and his henchmen stumble upon the portal. Fish and Kara’s affection for each other grows as they are being ruthlessly pursued. Finally the night of decision arrives for Fish, as Poppa and he confront each other in a suspenseful fiery setting of a surreal alien landscape. The Fisherman is forced to quickly fish for a fateful decision on the proper course of action he should take as he weighs concepts of vengeance, justice and redemption.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Night of the Fisherman by David Morabito is a nostalgic suspenseful journey that seamlessly blends the 1950s suburban milieu with a surreal and alien twist.

The characters stand out in this book. Fish is an achingly relatable protagonist whose inner turmoil feels extremely realistic. His bond with Kara, the spirited neighbour girl, adds warmth and hope to the otherwise intense narrative. Poppa, on the other hand, is a terrifyingly oppressive figure whose presence kept me on edge throughout the story.

The suburban setting is painted with amazing detail and was successful in evoking a strong sense of time and place. The alien realm introduces an imaginative layer of intrigue, with its deceptive beauty quickly unraveling into danger and suspense. The dramatic final confrontation between Fish and Poppa is both super exciting and touching, forcing Fish to wrestle with timeless themes of vengeance, justice, and redemption.

While the bookโ€™s rich descriptions and philosophical undertones are commendable, they occasionally slow down the pacing. Some readers might wish for a tighter narrative flow. Nevertheless, Night of the Fisherman is an emotionally gripping tale with strong character development and a unique blend of genres and I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy tales that mix introspection with high-stakes action.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Rebirth by V.P. Evans is a rollercoaster of suspense, emotion, and gripping twists that kept me hooked from start to finish. With its blend of mystery, flawed characters, and a touch of philosophy, this dark noir thriller is extremely engaging.

Evans does a fantastic job weaving suspense with deeper themes. The philosophical and artistic references add another layer to the story, making it more than just a typical whodunit. Chicagoโ€™s gritty streets come alive in detail, pulling the reader into the heart of the action.

While the pacing occasionally slows during some introspective moments, these sections also offer a refreshing depth that sets the book apart from others in the genre. Itโ€™s a thoughtful, layered read that kept me guessing right until the end.

If you love thrillers with complex characters, intriguing mysteries, and a dose of philosophical depth, The Rebirth is a must-read.

Inย MedEvac, poetry becomes a vehicle for self-examination and spiritual reflection, making it a powerful read for those familiar with trauma.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Andrew Laflecheโ€™s MedEvac is an intense and deeply moving poetry collection that leaves a lasting impression. Drawing from personal experiences of combat, loss, and personal struggles, Lafleche takes readers on a harrowing yet profoundly reflective journey. His poetry doesnโ€™t just recount experiences; it immerses you in the raw emotions of those moments, from the chaos of war to the quiet despair of personal loss, offering both pain and glimpses of hope.

One of the strengths of this collection is its brutal honesty. Lafleche doesnโ€™t shy away from the darker corners of his lifeโ€”whether itโ€™s the toll of combat or the pain of losing a childโ€”and that vulnerability makes his poetry incredibly powerful. His words resonate deeply, encapsulating the cyclical nature of trauma and healing. His ability to weave raw emotion into structured verse is remarkable, creating a collection that is both cathartic and thought-provoking.

The themes in MedEvacโ€”grief, redemption, and self-examinationโ€”are universally relatable, even for those who havenโ€™t experienced the extremes of war or personal tragedy. Laflecheโ€™s exploration of faith and its role in navigating pain adds a layer of introspection that lingers long after reading. Thereโ€™s a spiritual undercurrent that feels neither preachy nor forced, making it accessible to a wide range of readers.

While the collection is undeniably moving, some poems feel more personal than universal, which may make it harder for all readers to fully connect with every piece. That said, Laflecheโ€™s authenticity shines through in every line, and his words have a way of drawing you in, even when the subject matter is heavy.

Overall, MedEvac is a poignant and beautifully written collection that offers a glimpse into the struggles and resilience of the human spirit. Laflecheโ€™s unflinching introspection and masterful use of language make this a must-read for anyone looking for poetry that challenges and heals in equal measure. Four stars for an unforgettable and hauntingly raw work.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Wow, just wow! Andrew Masseurs does it again with The Uncles of the Apocalypse. If you thought the previous books in the Day in the Life Series were riveting, this fourth installment is an absolute powerhouse. With heart-pounding action, rich character development, and a hauntingly vivid post-apocalyptic world, this book had me hooked from page one.

The story masterfully balances tension and camaraderie as we follow the titular “Uncles” on their perilous journey to survive in a world turned upside down. Tim, Mr. Lee, and the rest of the group are thrown into increasingly dire situations where their loyalty, wit, and sheer determination are put to the ultimate test. What makes this series shine, though, is its ability to blend intense action sequences with deeply emotional moments.

The dynamic between the charactersโ€”particularly Mr. Lee’s almost Zen-like calm in the face of dangerโ€”keeps the narrative grounded even amidst chaos. Author Masseursโ€™ prose is cinematic. Whether it’s a harrowing encounter with monstrous creatures or a quiet, reflective moment between friends, you feel like you’re right there with them. The way the author handles Timโ€™s internal struggles and Mr. Leeโ€™s mysterious motivations adds depth and makes you care deeply about their fates.

What truly sets this book apart is its exploration of hope and humanity in a world filled with despair. Author Masseurs asks the big questionsโ€”what makes life worth fighting for? How do we hold on to our humanity when the world has lost its soul? Yet, he delivers these profound themes through a story thatโ€™s as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.

If youโ€™ve been following the series, you wonโ€™t be disappointed. And if this is your first foray into Author Masseursโ€™ apocalyptic universe, trust meโ€”you’re in for one unforgettable ride. The Uncles of the Apocalypse is a masterclass in storytelling, and I canโ€™t wait to see where this series takes us next. Five stars, hands down!

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Eric D. Goodman’s Faraway Tables is an exquisite collection of poems that takes the reader on a heartfelt journey through life’s quiet moments, grand explorations, and poignant reflections. I found myself captivated by the depth and clarity with which Goodman crafted his verses, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Goodman’s poetry strikes a perfect balance between introspection and storytelling. Whether he is recounting a vivid travel memory, delving into the bittersweet nostalgia of relationships, or reflecting on universal truths, his words resonate deeply. Poems like “Patience,” which celebrates the everyday ritual of brewing coffee, remind us of the beauty in routine:

“Certainly not our own.
These beans have traveled across four years,
across the globe from Indonesia to our homeโ€ฆโ€

The collectionโ€™s thematic range is remarkable. From the intimate musings of โ€œEmbracing Hermithoodโ€ to the powerful social commentary in โ€œToast to Friendship,โ€ each poem invites readers to pause, reflect, and savor the human experience. Goodman’s ability to weave moments of humor, melancholy, and wonder into his work is a testament to his mastery as a poet.

One standout for me was โ€œMoments,โ€ a poem that juxtaposes the mundane grind of daily life with the irreplaceable joy of cherished memories. Itโ€™s a reminder that the small, shared moments of love and connection are what truly define us.

โ€œHow can I pin down moments,
select them, give them weight,
anchor those greatest hitsโ€ฆโ€

The imagery in Faraway Tables is as vivid as it is evocative, painting landscapes and emotions that linger long after the final page. The collection is both accessible and profound, making it a perfect companion for seasoned poetry lovers and newcomers alike.

If youโ€™re looking for a collection that feels like a conversation with a wise and witty friend, Faraway Tables will not disappoint. Itโ€™s a celebration of lifeโ€™s many flavoursโ€”each poem an invitation to sit at the table and savour the feast. Bravo, Eric D. Goodman, for this literary gem.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Days of Fury by Andrew Masseurs is an impressive continuation of the A Day in the Life series, (A Day in the Life being the first book in the series and The Day After being the second), bringing character depth and high stakes together in a memorable and moving story. In this third installment, Masseurs takes us deeper into the minds and hearts of characters weโ€™ve grown to love, navigating a world as dangerous as it is desolate. Having read the first two books, I was already invested in these characters, but Days of Fury brings a whole new level of intensity and emotional resonance with it.

Teresa is, without a doubt, the heart of this story. Her journey is filled with vulnerability and strength, as she wrestles with questions about identity and loyalty in a world that demands she choose survival over connection. Author Masseurs beautifully portrays her inner struggle, making her both relatable and inspiring. Watching Teresa adapt and grow through impossible odds is one of the most compelling parts of the series, and here, she shines as both a survivor and a complex, fully-realized character. On the other hand, Paul Tully, with his gritty resilience and complex morality, adds an edge to the story that keeps you guessing. His character is flawed yet incredibly human, and his interactions with others reveal layers of toughness and hidden compassion. Paulโ€™s tough exterior and moments of vulnerability make him a character who is hard to forget.

Then thereโ€™s Lucy, whose moments of introspection and connection bring a warmth to the story, even as she faces her own trials. Her dynamic with Steven is one of the bookโ€™s unexpected highlightsโ€”a blend of humor, affection, and mutual support that offers a glimmer of hope amid all the darkness. The author does an excellent job of making these relationships feel genuine and necessary, as they give the characters a reason to fight on, even when things seem hopeless.

The world itself is unforgiving, but what makes Days of Fury stand out is how it explores the charactersโ€™ minds, pushing them to face not only physical dangers but also emotional ones. The writing is exceptional and vivid, painting a landscape as rich in emotional depth as it is in dystopian desolation.

Author Masseurs has created a powerful, thought-provoking read thatโ€™s about much more than a post-apocalyptic world; itโ€™s about resilience, love, and the raw strength it takes to keep going. If youโ€™re a fan of dystopian novels with strong character arcs, Days of Fury is a must-read.

With samurai, monsters, and magicians against them, will their newfound abilities – and the help of friendly yokai – be enough to save them?

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Simon Grey and the Curse of the Dragon God by Charles Kowalski is an exciting and exceptionally immersive adventure novel that takes readers on a fascinating journey through historical Japan. As someone who thoroughly enjoys historical fiction and fantasy, I found this book to be a delightful mix of both genres. Kowalski skillfully intertwines Japanese mythology with action, creating a world that’s both captivating and educational.

Simon, the protagonist, is endearing and relatable, and his encounters with various historical and mythical figures keep the story engaging. The book blends elements of Japanese folklore, such as yokai and samurai, into the narrative, adding layers of depth and intrigue. Itโ€™s the kind of adventure that keeps you turning pages, eager to see what magical or historical surprise lies ahead.

One of my favorite moments is when Simon and Oyuki meet Otohime at the undersea palace, Ryugujo. The vivid description of the magical underwater world is mesmerizing, and it truly showcases the authorโ€™s strength in world-building.

If you’re a fan of fast-paced, well-crafted historical fantasy with a unique cultural twist, Simon Grey and the Curse of the Dragon God is definitely a book you should pick up. Itโ€™s perfect for both younger readers and adults who love adventure, mythology, and a dash of history.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Evolving Ecstasy is the third book in Almost Human: The First Trilogy by Melanie Nowak (the first book is Fatal Infatuation and the second one is Lost Reflections). Evolving Ecstasy is an exhilarating and emotional ride, especially for fans of character-driven paranormal romance like me. I found myself completely drawn into the complex relationships and the heart-pounding tension between Felicity and Cain.

The book does a fantastic job balancing action with deep emotional moments, especially as Felicity grapples with her feelings for Cain and the dangers that come with loving a vampire. What I loved most was the evolution of their relationship, particularly how Cainโ€™s internal struggles as a vampire play a central role in their dynamic. The scenes between them are both tender and thrilling, making you root for them even as you fear for their survival.

Nowakโ€™s writing shines in this installment, especially when describing the complexity of Cainโ€™s character. As one of the more memorable lines goes: โ€œTo drink from a host, for a vampire, is the ultimate experience. Just as sex may be for a human being. Blood, that is true ecstasy.โ€ This quote perfectly encapsulates the intense emotions that run throughout the novel.

While the book is packed with action, particularly as Felicity faces off against zombies and vampire enemies, itโ€™s the quieter moments of vulnerability that stand out. One of my favorite quotes is when Cain reassures Felicity: โ€œFor you, Iโ€™d fight Satan himself.โ€ The devotion and passion between these characters elevate the stakes and make the story even more compelling.

Overall, Evolving Ecstasy delivers all the suspense, romance, and supernatural intrigue youโ€™d want from a paranormal series. I give it 5 stars for its gripping narrative and emotional depth. The Almost Human: The First Trilogy by Melanie Nowak is an addictive blend of romance, danger, and the supernatural. With captivating characters like Felicity and the enigmatic vampire Cain, the trilogy takes readers on an emotional journey through love, loss, and survival in a world filled with vampires, zombies, and moral dilemmas. It is perfect for fans of paranormal romance who crave deep character development and heart-racing action!

But when Reed begins to investigate Earthโ€™s disappearance, he realises how corrupt the Order has become.
And worst of all, how this is all his fault.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Lost Orbit by Peter Osterlund is a thrilling, fast-paced sci-fi adventure with a ton of mystery. The story follows Doctor Reed Doyle, a brilliant but troubled Planetologist whoโ€™s brought in by the Cosmos Order to solve one of the biggest mysteries in the universeโ€”Earthโ€™s sudden disappearance. No pressure, right? Reed has a dark past that heโ€™s trying to outrun, and the stakes are high. If he doesnโ€™t figure out what happened to Earth, heโ€™s headed to Eion, a prison planet where people are made immortal just so they can live out their centuries-long sentences. Talk about a nightmare!

What I loved most about this book is the way it blends suspense, action, and just the right amount of humor. Reed is such a relatable protagonist. Heโ€™s flawed, sarcastic, and completely over it, but heโ€™s also trying his best in an impossible situation. Plus, the deeper he gets into the mystery of Earthโ€™s disappearance, the more he realizes that the Cosmos Orderโ€”the people who hired himโ€”are way more corrupt than he ever imagined. And somehow, Reed himself is connected to all of this.

Osterlund does an awesome job of world-building here. The metropolis planet Haple feels alive and bustling, while the concept of Eion, the prison planet, is just the right amount of terrifying. The twists come at just the right moments, keeping the tension high while still giving you room to breathe with some of Reedโ€™s darkly funny observations.

My only small gripe is that a few of the plot twists were a little predictable, but honestly, that didnโ€™t take away from my overall enjoyment. The pace is snappy, and I couldnโ€™t stop reading to see how Reed would figure everything out.

Lost Orbit is a fantastic sci-fi mystery that combines an engaging plot with sharp, witty dialogue and a protagonist you canโ€™t help but root for. If you love space adventures with a hint of dark humor, this is one book you wonโ€™t want to miss. Can’t wait to see where Osterlund takes this story next!

Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

If you enjoyed Fatal Infatuation, you’re in for another exciting ride with Lost Reflections, the second book in The Almost Human Trilogy. Melanie Nowak delivered a fantastic mix of romance, danger, and supernatural intrigue that kept me hooked from start to finish.

This time around, Felicity is grappling with her feelings for Cain, the mysterious and brooding vampire whoโ€™s managed to capture both her heart and her trust. But, of course, things are never that simple! Felicity is starting to wonder whether Cainโ€™s vampire venom is clouding her judgment, and it doesnโ€™t help that sheโ€™s also caught up in a deadly game involving vengeful vampires and zombie minions. Talk about complicated! One thingโ€™s for sure: her heart may be lost to Cain, but the bigger question is, will she lose her life too?

The best part of this book is definitely the deeper dive into Cainโ€™s backstory. His past is both fascinating and dark, and we get a much clearer picture of why he is the way he is. Itโ€™s both enthralling and, at times, a little unsettling. And Felicityโ€™s struggle to figure out whether their connection is real or just a result of his vampire nature adds an emotional layer that keeps the reader invested in their relationship.

Thereโ€™s a lot more action in this one compared to the first book, and the pacing really picks up. There was vengeful vampires, zombies, and plenty of suspense to keep me on my toes. The romance is still at the heart of the story, but the stakes feel higher now, and Felicity is forced to make some tough decisions about what she really wants.

Overall, Lost Reflections is a great continuation of the series. The characters are even more developed, the action ramps up, and the romance has a darker, more complex edge to it. If you’re into vampire stories with a good mix of danger, drama, and romance, you’re definitely going to enjoy this one. Can’t wait to see how things unfold in the final book!

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Reluctant Queen by Tony Jaehrling, the first book in the Betrayal series, is a solid start to a gripping fantasy series. This book is. ablend of everything good: reluctant heroes, political drama, and kingdoms on the brink of war.

The story kicks off with the death of King Rhyman, whoโ€™s held the kingdom of Lorynthia together for decades. With the throne now empty, things quickly start to unravel. And then thereโ€™s Tamyr Thimpor, the kingโ€™s daughter, who really doesnโ€™t want to take on the role of queen. Sheโ€™s not your typical, eager-to-lead heroine, and thatโ€™s what makes her journey so interesting.

I really enjoyed the world-building in this book. Lorynthia is a kingdom filled with different regions and people, from the Dragon Mountains to the Red Desert. The author does a great job of making you feel like youโ€™re right there in the middle of it all. You can really feel the tension as the kingdom teeters on the edge of war, with enemies lurking in the shadows.

There are a few moments where the pacing slows down a bit, but thatโ€™s mostly because thereโ€™s a lot of groundwork being laid for future books in the series. Even so, the story keept me engaged with well-developed characters and a few twists that kept me guessing. And by the end, I was definitely ready for the next book!

Overall, Reluctant Queen is a great read if you like your fantasy with a bit of political intrigue and a heroine whoโ€™s not quite sure sheโ€™s ready for the spotlight. Tamyrโ€™s journey is just beginning, and I canโ€™t wait to see where it takes her next!

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Fatal Infatuation by Melanie Nowak is an amazing vampire romance novel, the first in the Almost Human trilogy, with a mix of suspense and exceptional characterisation.

The story centres around Felicity, this shy and kind-hearted college student who suddenly finds herself in a very complicated situation. Not only does she catch the eye of a charming human, but also Cainโ€”a brooding elder vampire who has his own messy past to deal with. Cainโ€™s not your typical vampire though. Heโ€™s trying to make peace with his past sins and even works to help other vampires coexist with humans. One line from Cain that really stood out to me was: โ€œIn losing my life, I found my purpose.โ€ That just sums up his whole internal struggle so well.

I loved the mix of romance, danger, and a bit of moral dilemma in this book. Felicity is trying to figure out her feelings while literally navigating a world with vampires and zombies, and honestly, I was here for it! Thereโ€™s a part where she says, โ€œNavigating friendships and desires was already hard enoughโ€”now thereโ€™s the small matter of survival,โ€ and I think that perfectly captures the vibe of the story.

The characters, especially Cain, are really well-developed. Heโ€™s not just a brooding vampireโ€”thereโ€™s a lot more to him, and you canโ€™t help but root for him. And then thereโ€™s Sindy, a seductive vampire who just loves stirring up trouble, especially when it comes to Felicityโ€™s new friend, Ben.

The only thing I would say is that some parts were a little predictable, but honestly, it didnโ€™t take away from my overall enjoyment. Thereโ€™s plenty of tension and excitement to keep you turning the pages. If youโ€™re into vampires with some emotional depth and a good mix of romance and action, Fatal Infatuation is a fantastic start to the series. I canโ€™t wait to see what happens next!

Can they heal the scars of past faults and reconstruct? Meanwhile, inexplicable new threats attempt to shatter their paradigms and transform reality altogether. The question both Amaru and Saios must face is this: what do you find when you look into mystery?

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Profana’s Faceless by Mason S. Haynie is a dark and complex exploration of survival, identity, and the mysteries that define our existence. Author Haynie explores the story of a community struggling to rebuild and find purpose after a catastrophic event against the backdrop of a desert wasteland! What is there not to like about this book?!

I would like to commend the author on the atmospheric world-building and the richly descriptive prose that was able to evoke a sense of desolation and tension that permeated every page. The book’s desolate world is not just a backdrop; itโ€™s a character in itself, actively shaping the lives and decisions of its inhabitants.

The characterisation of all the major characters is compelling, revealing their complexities and vulnerabilities in a way that feels authentic and relatable. The interplay between their need for survival and their search for meaning adds depth to the story, making their journey both physically and emotionally engaging.

The novel’s central themeโ€”the exploration of mystery and the unknownโ€”is handled with a deft hand. The author raises questions about the nature of reality and the secrets we must confront to survive. The introduction of new, inexplicable threats serves to heighten the tension and challenge the characters’ understanding of their world, leading to moments of existential reflection that will echo in the readers’ minds long after the book is over.

In spite of all these amazing things, the novelโ€™s dense narrative and philosophical undertones may pose a challenge for some readers. The pacing, while deliberate and effective in building suspense, occasionally slows down in favour of introspection.

Overall, despite these minor drawbacks, Profana’s Faceless is a thought-provoking and atmospheric read that rewards readers who appreciate layered storytelling and philosophical concepts. I’d strongly recommend it to all readers, as it is a haunting tale that lingers in the mind, inviting readers to look into the mysteries of their own lives and consider what they might find.

Book Review: Deadly Odds 7.0 by Allen Wyler

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Deadly Odds 7.0 by Allen Wyler is the seventh instalment of the Deadly Odds techno-thriller series in which the author ramps up the tension, combining cutting-edge technology with nail-biting suspense in a story that is as intellectually stimulating as it is unputdownable.

Arnold Gold, the main character, now more seasoned and cautious, faces a new challenge that tests his skills and moral compass. Tasked with infiltrating a high-profile Seattle law firm’s ultra-secure office, Arnold and his team must outsmart an AI-enhanced security system that represents the pinnacle of current technological advancements. The portrayal of this AI system is both realistic and thought-provoking, showcasing Wyler’s deep understanding of technology and its implications.

The character of Itzhak Mizrahi, the paranoid Head of Security, serves as a formidable antagonist. His intense scrutiny and strategic mind make the cat-and-mouse game between security and intrusion intensely compelling. Author Wyler does an excellent job of crafting a character who is not only a worthy opponent but also a catalyst for elevating the psychological tension throughout the narrative.

Author Wylerโ€™s narrative excels in pacing and structure, balancing technical explanations of hacking and security with fast-paced action sequences. This balance ensures that “Deadly Odds 7.0” is accessible to readers who may not have a background in technology while still satisfying those who do. The detailed descriptions of Seattleโ€™s downtown and the law firmโ€™s office add a vivid setting to the high-tech escapades.

However, the novel occasionally struggles with dialogue that can feel stilted, which slightly hampers its otherwise seamless narrative flow. Additionally, while the technological aspects are generally well-handled, there are moments where the technical jargon might overwhelm a casual reader. Despite these minor issues, the novelโ€™s strengths far outweigh its shortcomings.

Overall, Deadly Odds 7.0 is a thrilling addition to Allen Wylerโ€™s repertoire, offering fans of the series and newcomers alike a gripping tale of cyber intrigue. Arnold Goldโ€™s latest adventure is a reminder of the precarious balance between security and privacy in the digital age and the lengths individuals will go to protectโ€”or dismantleโ€”it. This instalment not only entertains but also raises pertinent questions about the future of AI and cybersecurity, making it a must-read for techno-thriller aficionados.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Means of Keeping by Rich Marcello is a beautifully penned novel that resonates deeply with our current environmental and emotional situations. Author Marcello skilfully captures the complex web of human emotions against the stark backdrop of a climate-ravaged world, crafting a poignant story.

The main characters, Tereza and David, are developed with remarkable depth and realism. Their journey through grief and towards healing in the wake of a devastating climate crisis-induced tragedy is both heart-wrenching and beautifully depicted. The personal losses they endure are a microcosm of the global catastrophe unfolding around them, making their story a powerful allegory.

The author’s ability to intertwine personal and global tragedies is quite impressive. The exploration of love, renewal, and environmental activism is beautifully woven into the story, making The Means of Keeping a significant commentary on the times we live in. The novel does not just tell a storyโ€”it also poses urgent questions about the future of our planet and the legacy we wish to leave for future generations.

Genre: Science-Fiction, Space Opera
Format: E-book

Blurb:
Another spaceship, another explosion. Harold Galahad would love to wake from this particular nightmare that is so eerily similar to the events that cost him his beloved wife and destroyed his soul. But the only way out is by saving the ship and its entire crew.
If you ask Harold Galahad, he isnโ€™t fit to lead a crew or command a ship. But nobody is asking Harry.
Instead, he finds himself back on the bridge, on a ship stranded in space, no help in sight, only kept alive by remnants of a gradually failing life support system.

His crew? A nurse running out of tentacles and eyes to care for all the wounded, a chief engineer who knows all about her systems but struggles with people, a chief of security who thinks everything can be solved with paragraphs from the Companyโ€™s handbook, a cursing chief of logistics, an anxiety-ridden communications officer, and a first officer who stays mysterious and feigns ignorance. This ship needs a captain to avert a complete disaster that includes the death of everyone on board.
Can Galahad overcome his trauma? Can he find solutions where there are none? And worst of all, can he unravel all the mysteries surrounding the ship, its crew and the system they all work for?
If you enjoy a complex tale that brings a human element to all species that travel space, combined with a multi-layered mystery, and starring a broken hero, Herald Petrel by Strange Seawolf will deliver.

Warning: Contains adult language and a considerable amount of swearing — it is a cargo space ship in a desparate situation, after all.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Herald Petrel by Strange Seawolf is an insanely gripping space odyssey that brilliantly blends the trauma and heroism of the protagonist, Harold Galahad, with the high-stakes drama of a ship teetering on the brink of disaster.

From the opening pages, where Harold is introduced grappling with the ghosts of his past losses, to the climactic moments of life-and-death decisions, Author Seawolf maintains a taut narrative that kept me thoroughly engaged. The author’s portrayal of Haroldโ€™s internal battles and eventual redemption is both compelling and emotionally relatable. The secondary characters were also very well-developed and thoroughly likeable, with their unique quirks and challenges, making the dynamics very rich.

One of the best things about this book was the way the author has weaved a multi-layered mystery within the narrative. The suspense is palpable, driving the story forward with a relentless pace that ensures there’s never a dull moment. Moreover, the author’s world-building is out-of-the-world, with detailed descriptions of the shipโ€™s mechanics and the vastness of space that enveloped me in a fully realised universe. The integration of various species and their interactions adds a rich touch to the narrative, highlighting the novel’s underlying themes of unity and understanding across differences.

Herald Petrel is an amazing science fiction read, offering a story that is as much about overcoming personal demons as it is about the thrill of space exploration. It is a heart-pounding adventure that delivers in spades, making it a must-read that will leave you thinking long after the last page is turned.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A Timeless Attraction by ET McNamara is a time-travel historical fiction novel that will take you on a ride into the past. I love the overall concept of time-travel historical novels because they don’t just show you historical events; they do it from the perspective and sensibilities of a person from the modern world, and that’s where the genre itself comes out as a winner for me. Author McNamara’s book was no different and delivered what I had been expecting – a fabulous female lead who embarks on a journey to the past and explores a time that is completely different.

I adore author McNamara’s narrative style and the way he weaves complex character stories into the main narrative of the plot, but this time I did feel that the prose was a bit too heavy and its pace lagged in places. Although I still enjoyed the book, I felt it could have been better edited. But then, I am an editor and that is my personal opinion.

Overall, the book had a good flow, except for the few places where the pacing lagged, great characterisation, amazing historical perspective and setup, and a brilliant story overall, and I would recommend it to all historical fiction readers.

The Day After by Andrew Masseurs is the gripping continuation of A Day in the Life by Andrew Masseurs. What I love about this book (and loved it in the first book too) is the fact that Author Andrew brings out not only the physical challenges of surviving in a hostile environment but also the emotional toll it takes on the characters in his writing.

The pacing of the book is exceptionally relentless, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish. Each chapter unfolds with a new revelation or threat, propelling the story forward with gripping momentum. Author Masseurs’ ability to blend action-packed sequences with introspective moments takes this book to a whole different level.

Exiles by L.J. Ambrosio is the concluding book in the Reflections of Michael Trilogy. It is the triumphant culmination of an emotional journey through love, loss, and self-discovery. And the best part about this book is the backdrop it is set againstโ€”Paris.

Elijah is a promising young lawyer, in love with his work and confident in the potential of the human race.
His law firmโ€™s senior partner gives him his first important assignment. Elijah will have to follow the case of Leonard, an elderly engineer who lives in Montepastore, a small village in the Bolognese Apennines (Italy).

Leonard’s question concerns the supplementary contribution that engineers enrolled in the professional register are required to pay to Inarcassa, the Engineersโ€™ Pension Fund. At first, the case seems simple. It was the subject of a previous ruling by the Court of Cassation. But Leonard is not satisfied with anย institutionalย response. He wants to know why. He wants to know what hides behind the Supreme Courtโ€™s ruling.
Leonard’s demands grow meeting after meeting, and the subject of the dispute widens to include ethical, religious, and historical concerns.
As in the previous manuscripts, questions about the human condition are at the center of this philosophical debate. In the absence of answers, what is the point of writing about anything else?
The editing and translation of this book was done by Ian Zwaschka.

Dimitri has a plan to stop the conscription. He persuades Raidan to follow him into a cave where an old acquaintance, the mysterious Adrik, awaits them. Dimitri believes Adrik has a way to give them magic and, with that, the power to stop Kingston. Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Blood Bound: The Guardians of the Weldafire Stone by Trinity Cunningham is the first book in the The Guardians of the Weldafire Stone series. It is an enthralling fantasy adventure that gripped me from start to finish.

Author Cunningham weaves a compelling narrative filled with magic, intrigue, and suspense. From the outset, I was drawn into a world brimming with danger and intrigue, where the fate of an entire kingdom hangs in the balance. The concept of the Weldafire Stone and the power it bestows upon its guardian adds an intriguing layer to the story, as Raidan, the protagonist, grapples with his newfound abilities and the responsibility they entail.

The pacing of the novel is excellent, with plenty of action-packed scenes and unexpected twists that kept me engaged. The descriptions were vivid and realistic. While the story follows some familiar fantasy tropes, the author puts her own unique spin on them, creating a fresh and immersive reading experience. The book sets the stage for what promises to be an epic series. I cannot wait to read the next instalment in the Guardians of the Weldafire Stone saga.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Naked Came the Detective by Glendall C. Jackson III is a refreshing twist on the classic murder mystery genre. I really liked this book because it defies tired tropes as author Jackson introduces a skilled and versatile sex worker who is thrust into the role of amateur detective. The unique perspective of a high-end sex worker really sets this novella apart, and what really adds to the narrative is author Jackson’s meticulous attention to detail, offering a glimpse into the lives of characters who navigate the complexities of power, privilege, and deception.

Gods of IMAGO by Greg Belliveau is the second book in the IMAGO series. Without a doubt, this book is a literary masterpiece that had me glued to its pages from the very first page to the haunting final sentence. I have not read the first book (though now I’m going to go back and read it) and this book can be read as a standalone as all the necessary details are provided by the author whenever necessary. Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Don’t Feed the Beast: But Do Punish the Free-Riders by Solveig Larssen is a thought-provoking exploration of a dystopian world grappling with issues of migration, diversity, and justice. Set in the contrasting nations of Mountainland and Fjordland, author Larssen weaves a beautiful narrative that reflects the complexities of our modern society. Through the eyes of characters like Eskild, Dag, and Selma, the novel explores the challenges of globalisation and the rise of disruptive transnational platform organisations.

Author Larssen’s storytelling is both immersive and timely, offering a glimpse into a world where justice hangs in the balance. The addition of delightful fable animals adds a lot of character and depth to the narrative, making it an absolutely brilliant read. As the first book in the Triumvirate series, Don’t Feed the Beast sets the stage for a compelling saga that promises to delve deeper into the themes of peace, coexistence, and societal change.

It is a fast-paced novel, but I did feel that the character development might have suffered because of it. Though as this book is a part of a series, I will hold my judgement on characterisation for now. However, the author’s ability to tackle complex social issues within a dystopian framework is commendable. Overall, Don’t Feed the Beast is a wonderful read and I’d recommend it to all dystopian and sci-fi readers.
