Makotoโ€™s eldest adoptive sister, Athena, remains banished from Zenith Palace for uncovering the emperorโ€™s secret bastard. She is visited by her former dragon uncle, who shares a rumor that the emperor will be assassinated during the annual ball. Athena has no choice but to break her exile to save her father. Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Epic fantasy often hinges on spectacle, but The Orichalcum Crown by J.J.N. Whitley distinguishes itself by placing intimacy, memory, and moral responsibility at the heart of its world-building. Set within the empire of Kauneus, the novel follows Makoto Clarissa vi Kauneus, a young princess burdened not only by political expectation but by fragmented memories, inherited trauma, and a power she does not fully understand. From its opening moments, the story establishes a deeply personal tone, even as it unfolds on an imperial scale.

Makoto is a compelling protagonist precisely because she is uncertain. She makes her way through the courtly intrigue, assassination threats, and questions of succession while grappling with her origins in Avalon and the meaning of the Orichalcum Crown itself, an artifact that symbolizes humility and responsibility rather than glory. The political tension surrounding Avalonโ€™s possible independence, the shadowy influence of religious and noble factions, and the menace of unseen conspirators give the narrative a steady undercurrent of suspense. Yet the novel never loses sight of its emotional core: Makotoโ€™s relationships with her sisters, her father, and those sworn to protect her.

Author Whitleyโ€™s world-building is meticulous and textured, enriched by mythology, ritual, and a cast of sharply drawn supporting characters, most notably the volatile Athena, the observant Reina, and the enigmatic Morgana. The prose is elegant without being overwrought, allowing moments of introspection to sit naturally beside scenes of political maneuvering and latent violence. Themes of identity, legacy, restraint, and power recur throughout, lending the story a philosophical depth that to to another level, beyond standard fantasy fare.

Overall, The Orichalcum Crown by J.J.N. Whitley is a thoughtful, character-driven, intense, and impressive opening to a new epic fantasy series. Readers who value political complexity, morally grounded protagonists, and richly imagined worlds will find much to admire here, and plenty to anticipate in the volumes to come.

Most people pass the shop without a second glance, mistaking it for an old estate agent’s with bad signage. But inside, James (Jay), Jones (Jo), and their not-so-receptionist Suzรฉ tackle problems that shouldnโ€™t exist.
When Phillens Martens arrives clutching an apple-shaped brooch, theyโ€™re drawn into a tangle of illusionists, collectors, and the ancient title of Prince of the Apple Towns โ€” a title that tends to cause chaos for whoever holds it.
Witty, wondrous, and brimming with invention,ย Prince of the Apple Townsย is the first adventure inย James and Jonesย โ€” a whimsical fantasy series about a not-so-ordinary shop, its impossible cases, and the unlikely team who take them on.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Prince of the Apple Towns by Del Elle is an inventive work of fantasy that unfolds less like a conventional quest and more like a dream you slowly realize you are already inside. The story follows Phillens Martens, an anxious, slightly off-balance man who finds himself entangled with a pair of eccentric โ€œIntuitive Consultantsโ€ and, through them, a far larger conflict tied to the mysterious Apple Towns and their powerful brooches. From the very first chapter, author Del Elle establishes a tone that is whimsical on the surface, yet edged with unease and consequence beneath.

What truly distinguishes this book is its worldbuilding through conversation and implication rather than exposition. The Apple Towns, Delcorf, Akane, Gala, Cox, Braeburn, Elstar, and others, feel lived-in and ancient without ever being formally mapped out for the reader. The brooches, each tied to a town and granting extraordinary abilities, introduce a compelling power structure that culminates in the titular contest: the struggle to become the Prince of the Apple Towns. This looming competition adds real stakes to what initially feels like an almost playful narrative.

Characters like Jo and Jay bring levity and texture, but they are never merely comic relief. As the story progresses, the danger becomes tangible, especially with the arrival of Orchardรฉ and the revelation of what possession of multiple brooches means. The action sequences are sharp and kinetic, yet still grounded in the bookโ€™s distinctive, slightly surreal rhythm.

Ultimately, Prince of the Apple Towns is a story about power, guardianship, and choice, and about what happens when responsibility is forced upon those who never asked for it. Itโ€™s a richly imaginative, thoughtfully paced fantasy that rewards attentive reading and leaves the door open for intriguing continuations in this unusual world.

Book Review: The Old Clock Peddler by David Morabito

Book Details:

Author: David Morabito
Release Date: 30 September 2025
Series:
Genre:
Format: E-book
Pages: 269 pages
Publisher:
Blurb:
This novel continues where the Night of the Fisherman left off and is packed with suspense, fantasy, and romance as well as elements of science fiction with shrouded references to quantum physics. The characters are instantly transported between different realms in the cosmos using wormholes where the entry and exit ports are defined by clocks composed of mysterious substances. Each clock is the mirror image of the other, with each working backwards from the other.
We follow the exploits of the intriguing dark character known as the Old Clock Peddler, who sells paired clocks to unsuspecting consumers in different worlds causing interesting and unexpected interactions between diverse populations of beings. All the while, the Peddler has mysterious interactions with the characters caught up in his intergalactic web of intrigue, which include Lexicon, the principality of Yore and the land of the Druids

Intrigue continues to follow two of the main characters from Night of the Fisherman, Fish (a.k.a. the Fisherman) and Kara in the 1950’s-1960’s suburban town of Lexicon. They along with other neighbors now have to contend with the power-hungry Surf, the surviving son of Poppa, who previously terrorized the local neighborhood and beyond. All the while, the character known as the dark Entity lurks about ready to do Surf’s bidding.
A secret society in Lexicon known as the City Fathers anoints Surf as their new Boss in their quest to amass more power and wealth, after the death of Poppa. A shady slimy lawyer named McAlister Bilge aids Surf in his quest for more power and wealth. Other neighbors such as little Elmo get caught up in the intrigue as well as the old man Mr. Ages, now reunited with his long lost son after several decades, Tommy, who once served as King of Yore under the name of Twede.
A host of new characters are introduced, including three college students, one of which believes he understands the physics of instantaneous intergalactic transport, while another desires Kara, the Fisherman’s girlfriend, to be his own. Frank Knightlite, a heroic figure in the small town of Lexicon, is known to shed light within the bowels of darkness. Aisling is a young Irish lass whose family got marooned in the strange world of mutated descendants of the Druids, courtesy of one of the Peddler’s wormholes. She gets rescued by the Fisherman and Frank Knightlite, who use a recently reestablished porthole to bring her back to Lexicon and eventually to that big green island across the sea to be united with her surviving relatives. Frank Knightlite has a clandestine encounter with Leena, the terrified and neglected young wife of Surf, in order to extract needed information from her.
In the Kingdom of Yore, an ensuing power struggle is in the works as Renigade a wayward Elder had escaped the palace dungeon and seeks to solidify a power sharing pact with Surf. The small gnomish person Georgos contributes to the drama as he again is put into service by his dethroned king Twede, now known as Tommy Ages. Twede reunites with his love Tarala when the porthole between Lexicon and Yore is reestablished by the Peddler.
It is later disclosed that Surf has an estranged brother who covets what Surf has and is determined to claim all that Surf inherited from Poppa as his birthright. Finally, the novel climaxes at the scene of the lake of fire, a huge cauldron-like depression in the planetary surface of Yore. Here, Surf plans to send his prisoners to their demise in the same way his Poppa attempted in the Night of the Fisherman. However, Surf does not count on having to contend with his brother as they confront each other near the precipice of the fiery lake, as the prisoners look on while the drama unfolds in unexpected and suspenseful ways.

Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The Old Clock Peddler by David Morabito is an unapologetically ambitious novel that dares to blend genres, timelines, and entire worlds into a single, intricate story. It is a heady mix of fantasy, science fiction, suspense, and myth that asks what happens when the very fabric of time becomes a weapon in the wrong hands. Picking up after Night of the Fisherman, it expands that universe into something grander, stranger, and far more cosmic, where wormholes, quantum portals, and mirrored clocks connect realities that feel both familiar and fantastical.

The brilliance of the story lies in how author Morabito balances the ordinary and the extraordinary. One moment weโ€™re in the 1950s suburbia of Lexicon, with neighbors feuding and secret societies pulling strings; the next, weโ€™re swept into Yore, a world of Druids, monarchs, and celestial intrigue. At the heart of it all is the enigmatic Old Clock Peddler, a merchant of fate who trades in time itself, selling paired clocks that open portals between realms. His motives remain tantalizingly ambiguous, and that ambiguity fuels the novelโ€™s haunting energy. What makes it even more fascinating is the undercurrent of quantum theory, not just as science, but as philosophy, questioning whether actions in one reality can truly be separated from another.

Returning characters like Fish (the Fisherman) and Kara anchor the story emotionally, while newcomers like Frank Knightlite, Aisling, and Leena add texture and momentum. Author Morabito writes with cinematic vision: his worlds shimmer with contrast, from suburban intrigue to interplanetary warfare, yet he never loses sight of the emotional threads laced with loyalty, love, and the eternal struggle for power.

By the time the story barrels toward its climax at the fiery lake of Yore, it feels like watching mythology and physics collide as it gets unpredictable, charged, and strangely moving. The Old Clock Peddler isnโ€™t a light read; itโ€™s sprawling, layered, and packed with ideas. But for readers who love universe-spanning sagas and thoughtful science-fantasy with heart, this book offers a rare kind of satisfaction, the sense of stepping into a world both ancient and ahead of its time.

A fantasy about the monsters we create when we forget who we are.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Robb Watsonโ€™s Dreamland: Selimโ€™s Echo is a darkly imaginative middle-grade/YA crossover that blends the pulse of sports fiction with the shadows of psychological horror and the tenderness of coming-of-age. Author Watson excels at crafting horror imagery that is both surreal and psychologically resonant. Selim, as the literal embodiment of Milesโ€™s self-doubt and fear, is a masterstroke of symbolism. The dream sequences are cinematic, often evoking Neil Gaimanโ€™s Coraline or the darker tones of Stranger Things.

At its core, this isnโ€™t just a story about nightmares, but about guilt, regret, and ultimately redemption. Milesโ€™s arc feels emotionally honest and hopeful. The second half of the book, where Miles becomes a guide within Dreamland to help Mia confront her own anxieties, expands the novelโ€™s scope beautifully. It reframes Dreamland as not just a personal battleground but a shared space for healing.

Over all, Dreamland: Selimโ€™s Echo is a vivid, unsettling, and heartfelt novel that balances horror with hope. Though it occasionally lingers too long in its dream cycles and could sharpen its supporting cast, it stands out for its inventive symbolism, strong emotional core, and its message: that the scariest monsters are often the ones we carry inside ourselves, and the only way to defeat them is to face them.

Legends and common knowledge donโ€™t always agree, but when it comes to wizards the facts are not so far from the stories.
Both say that tunics are made from wild magic. Both say that a len who catches, tames, and puts on a tunic is a wizard. And both say that a wizard is named and known by his deeds. Take Duin the Fearless or Bjarne the Vengeful as examples.
My name is Hol and I am a wizard of the kingdom of Dar.

Though this is true, what name will come from my deeds is yet unknown.
From the time I was young, my mother said I would be known as Hol the Proud. The Queen once called me Hol the Loyal. The other wizards of Dar call me Hol the Upstart. Most times, I fear I will be remembered as Hol the Failed.
My tunic has its own opinions about what I should be called.
In fact, my tunic has opinions about everything.
If it has its way, I will be known as Hol the Fortunetelling Wizard.
But there hasnโ€™t been a fortunetelling wizard in Dar in over eight hundred years and because I didnโ€™t actually catch or tame my tunic, I fear even more that I might not even be a wizard at all.
I want to prove my mother wrong.
I want to prove the other wizards wrong.
And most of all, even if my tunic ends up being right, I hope I prove myself wrong as well.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Amanda Whiteโ€™s The Fortunetelling Wizard and Other Stories from the Kingdom of Dar is a lushly imagined fantasy tale set in the kingdom of Dar, where magic is not merely spectacle but a dangerous, demanding force. At its heart is Hol, a young wizard bound to a tunic of wild magic, who dares to take on the mantle of being the fortune-telling wizard, thought to be extinct for over eight hundred years.

What makes the book so compelling is its voice. Told in first person, Holโ€™s narration is both intimate and wry, colored by his constant dialogue with his sentient tunic. This relationship, half companion and half conscience, lends the story a unique freshness, layering humor and heart into scenes that might otherwise veer too dark. The mythology of fortunetelling wizards is richly drawn, giving the narrative a depth of history that feels lived-in.

Thematically, the novel is about destiny versus agency. Hol is repeatedly warned that โ€œknowing the future does not save one from itโ€, yet he clings to the belief that โ€œtelling the future saves others.โ€ This tension drives the story, especially as he becomes entangled with kings, queens, banshees, and form stealers.

The bookโ€™s greatest strength, its rich and lyrical prose, is also, at times, its weakness. Sentences often seem to run long, layered with description and lore. While this creates atmosphere, it occasionally hampers pacing. A leaner approach could heighten the urgency of the plot without sacrificing its richness.

That said, author White succeeds in crafting a tale that feels both old and new. The interplay of folklore, political intrigue, and personal ambition gives the novel a layered texture, and Holโ€™s determination to prove himself makes him an endearing protagonist. The climactic confrontations, especially with the form stealer, are vivid, cinematic, and emotionally charged.

On the whole, The Fortunetelling Wizard is a thoughtful, atmospheric fantasy that stands out for its inventive magic system and its narratorโ€™s unique voice. Though it could benefit from tighter pacing in places, it remains a worthy, ambitious contribution to the genre.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

If youโ€™re someone who loves classic fairy tale energy (think shimmering kingdoms, ancient magic, enchanted creatures, and brave quests) then The Faery Enchantment by Marie Lukic is bound to charm you. Author Lukic has created a rich, imaginative world where dragons, merfolk, and faeries collide in a story brimming with wonder, danger, and heartfelt moments.

At its heart, this is a tale of family, loyalty, and the lengths weโ€™ll go to save the ones we love. Dottimarโ€™s desperation to save her rainbow dragon son, Cathoundral, sets the tone for a story full of high-stakes adventure. Meanwhile, Verimetus and Vermial (who might just be my favorite characters) add layers of ancient wisdom and courage to this already magical narrative.

The underwater scenes are beautifully rendered and feel lush and vivid, and the blend of folklore with fantasy is handled with a delicate, almost lyrical touch. Author Lukicโ€™s world-building feels expansive and lived-in, with hints of deeper mythology beneath the surface.

While I loved the story, at times, the pacing felt a little uneven. Certain sections could have been tighter to keep the momentum flowing, especially for younger readers who thrive on action and clarity. However, the richness of the world and the warmth of the characters more than make up for it.

The Faery Enchantment is perfect for fans of The Water Horse or The Spiderwick Chronicles, those who love their fantasy with a splash of wonder, heart, and a dash of darkness.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Isabella Airyfairyabelous & the Sleepy Dragon by Marie Lukic is a fantasy book that is whimsical, witty, and full of wonder. It is a joyride through a richly imaginative world that children (and adults with a playful heart) will adore.

Princess Isabella is no ordinary royalโ€”sheโ€™s brave, quirky, and driven by a fierce love for her mother, Queen Julianne, whoโ€™s fallen gravely ill. When traditional cures fail, Isabella sets off on a quest brimming with dragons, magic, unexpected allies, and some seriously laugh-out-loud moments.

What I loved most is how effortlessly author Lukic blends classic fairy tale elements with modern charm. The writing sparkles with humor, the world-building is vibrant and whimsical, and the characters are unforgettable. Thereโ€™s depth beneath the adventure with themes of courage, freedom, and love running throughout the tale.

For young readers, this is the perfect introduction to fantasy as it is accessible yet layered with emotion and meaning. And for grown-up readers? Itโ€™s a reminder of the kind of magic we used to believe in. I’d recommend it for fans of How to Train Your Dragon, Ella Enchanted, and the kind of stories that make bedtime reading a nightly event to look forward to.

Reika is a changeling, a human girl brought up in a kind community of Metazoans, a sapient
zoomorphic species who migrated from a distant land long ago. She works as a servant at the
Kingโ€™s citadel.
But all this changes when Reika and her friends Melito and Tabithaโ€”royal guards
at the citadelโ€”are attacked by rebel Metazoans led by the fearsome sorcerer Magnus. Facing
death, Reikaโ€™s true nature is revealed by the light of the full moon; a dormant power is
awakened, and Reikaโ€™s destiny changes forever.

In order to heal the darkness awoken in Reikaโ€™s soul, and to escape the machinations of
powerful foes, she will need allies. Thus begins an epic journey spanning multiple continents
and cultures, through magical and material perils, and even bending the fabric of time itself…
Lunarmancer is the debut YA fantasy-epic by Jake Bennett, a novel that marries the brilliant
ensemble casts of Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy with Tolkienโ€™s luscious world-building.

Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Lunarmancer by Jake Bennett is a sweeping, richly imagined fantasy epic that blends classic genre tropes like magic academies, prophecies, chosen ones, with a surprisingly intimate emotional core. What begins as a tale of self-discovery rapidly unfolds into a sprawling, multi-threaded saga of war, identity, loss, and resilience.

At the heart of it is Reika, a former servant girl grappling with a curse that transforms her into somethign she never imagined. Her journey is full of pain, sacrifice, and moments of profound inner reckoning. As a reader, and especially as a developmental editor, I was struck by the way Bennett threads psychological realism into a fantastical framework. Reikaโ€™s arc isnโ€™t just a magical evolution; itโ€™s a deeply human coming-of-age shaped by trauma, survival, and rediscovered agency.

What impressed me most is how author Bennett manages to juggle a vast ensemble cast including Junayd, Kenzuo, Lief, Destrian, and so many others, without losing narrative focus. Each character, even those on the margins, feels fully rendered with complex motivations and believable flaws. Thankfully, the villainy isnโ€™t cartoonish and the heroes arenโ€™t infallible. Itโ€™s this grey-toned morality that adds gravitas to the story, grounding its epic battles and magical lore in real emotional stakes.

The world-building is elaborate and detailed, perhaps a touch overwhelming at times, especially with terms like Dragelve Consortium, Somnium Carcerem, and Ferrum Champions flying fast and a bit too early (for me personally), but readers who love rich lore will find much to feast on. Thereโ€™s a real sense of history behind every location, political alliance, and magical artifact.

Stylistically, the prose leans towards cinematic, with fast-paced scenes punctuated with high-octane action. But where author Bennett shines is in quieter moments, like a quiet conversation under moonlight, that give the narrative its soul.

What keeps this book from being a full 5 stars is pacing: there are moments where exposition threatens to bog down the emotional momentum, and the sheer number of locations and lore elements can be disorienting. That said, itโ€™s a minor flaw in what is otherwise an impressively ambitious debut.

For readers of Brandon Sanderson, Tamora Pierce, or Fullmetal Alchemist, Lunarmancer will feel both nostalgic and refreshingly bold. Itโ€™s a tale of found family, inherited power, and the subtle, unglamorous courage it takes to choose your own path, even when fate has already written your story.

A daunting task, until Skye learns Evandra has a secret; her family belongs to a magical society, and the girls quickly concoct a plan that will pay off the debt, and could make them popular.
Skye knows how to make natural hair dye and Eva knows how to infuse creative, mental and physical enhancements into the solution. Want to be more creative? Dye your hair yellow! Want to pass that exam? Blue hair will help you retain all the knowledge you read, and no one suspects thereโ€™s real magic behind it, even with a warning that states prolonged exposure to the โ€˜magical dyeโ€™ will have serious consequences. Before long the entire student body is awash in a rainbow of bright colours, but more importantly, success.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

What starts as a cheeky, fun idea with two teens creating a magical hair dye to help pay back their school, turns into a surprisingly thoughtful and layered narrative about friendship, responsibility, and the moral grey zones of using magic to โ€œfixโ€ what life throws at you.

Eva and Skye’s characters feel refreshingly real. Their dialogue sparkles with teen wit and weariness, and their bond with a mix of codependency, mischief, and genuine care, grounds the entire story. Eva, born into a magical family, is cautious and self-aware; Skye, her normie best friend, is impulsive and passionate. The magical hair dye they concoct to boost academic performance starts as an innocent hustle but quickly becomes a social phenomenon with unintended consequences.

Thereโ€™s a lot to love here: the cozy world-building with its spells and Yule flames, the textured family dynamics, the hints of larger magical systems just beneath the surface, and the way the story never forgets itโ€™s about two girls trying to make sense of their power โ€” both magical and personal. The writing is brisk, charming, and unafraid to lean into the awkward and the vulnerable. And the author doesnโ€™t shy away from heavier moments of jealousy and insecurity to the ethical dilemmas of magical capitalism.

What I loved most was the commentary on consent and boundaries. The dye may sparkle and shimmer, but it also influences emotions and behaviors making the line between intention and manipulation razor thin, and the book knows it.

If you enjoy contemporary fantasy that feels nostalgic yet emotionally intelligent, this book hits the mark. Think Sabrina the Teenage Witch meets Nevermoor, with a slice-of-life format that makes space for character growth over spectacle.

It’s a perfect start to what I hope is a long, magical series. Canโ€™t wait for more of Eva & Skyeโ€™s adventures.

“The two of us against all of them? How unfair for them.”
Seeker Hokurenโ€™s big break is coming: the prince of Velles hires her to find his missing daughter. Tracking down all those lost pet cats for a pittance has finally paid off.
Together with her eager but raw elven assistant Cinna, Hokuren quickly sees the case spiral into much more than a mere missing princess. Thereโ€™s an elf kidnapping scheme, magic said to no longer be possible (never trust the wizards), a long lost goddess, and a monstrous captain of the guard in the middle of it all.

When Cinna is caught in the crosshairs, Hokuren is working for more than the needed pay: sheโ€™s got to uncover every secret to save Cinnaโ€™s life. Theyโ€™ll need to work together against militant librarians, crazed acolytes, and even her former boss in the City Watch. Because as Hokurenโ€™s bond with Cinna grows, it seems everyone believes the biggest secret of them all is hiding within her unassuming assistant. . .
A lighthearted and fast-paced fantasy adventure full of action, mystery and sly humor, Cinnamon Soul is also the heart-warming exploration of an unbreakable bond of friendship forged between two women as they struggle against the forces of the elite and powerful.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Wow! What a ride. Cinnamon Soul by Quinn Lawrence is a deeply character-driven exploration of identity, trauma, and the complicated inheritance of power. At the heart of this story is Cinna, an orphaned elf with no illusions about her place in the world. Sheโ€™s sarcastic, stubborn, and scuffed by lifeโ€”but thatโ€™s what makes her so compelling.

From its opening pages, the novel delivers a whip-smart narrative voice thatโ€™s impossible to ignore. Cinna is a force, barreling through the alleyways of Velles chasing criminals one moment, and then stumbling, quite literally, into a spiritual awakening the next. When itโ€™s revealed that a goddess named Senara has been secretly living in her soul since birth, the narrative pivots into something far more layered: an examination of consent, purpose, and self-determination.

What I found particularly affecting was how the novel treats divinity with skepticism. Cinna doesn’t revere Senara; she challenges her. And the more the goddess reveals about Cinnaโ€™s past and future, the more the novel begins to interrogate the very idea of divine right. It’s bold, philosophical, and filled with ethical grey zones that I loved wading through.

But donโ€™t let the existential themes fool you because this book is also funny, fast-paced, and full of brilliant world-building. The magical systems are creative, the politics are messy and real, and the supporting cast grounds the narrative in emotional truth. Hokurenโ€™s steady presence and fierce protectiveness offer the perfect foil to Cinnaโ€™s recklessness.

The soul-world segments, dripping with surreal detail, gave me Spirited Away vibes but laced with a distinctly adult kind of grief and growth. Thereโ€™s something truly special in how author Lawrence renders the soul: moss-covered ground, blueberry-dotted dresses from forgotten childhood dreams, and monsters that speak like mentors.

By the time I turned the last page, I was exhausted in the best way. Cinnamon Soul confronts and demands that we question who gets to shape a destiny, and whether inherited power, divine or otherwise, is ever truly benign. Highly recommended for readers who crave emotionally rich fantasy with brains, heart, and teeth.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Adventures of Chii by Alisanya is one of those books that reads like a heartfelt anime adventure with surprising emotional depth and an unexpected undercurrent of darkness. What starts as a coming-of-age tale of a sweet, spirited catgirl quickly morphs into a layered journey through trauma and power reclaimed.

Chii, the titular heroine, is a petite catgirl whose idyllic childhood is torn apart by a mysterious mist that turns her entire village into howling, shadowy spectres. From that moment on, her life spirals into slavery, survival, and slowlyโ€”painfullyโ€”freedom. I found the setup heartbreakingly vivid. There’s a real sense of emotional texture in how author Alisanya portrays the grief, betrayal, and vulnerability of a child thrust into a brutal world not of her choosing.

But Chii is no passive victim. As the story unfolds, she evolvesโ€”emotionally and magically. She finds allies, trains with fae warriors, joins tournaments, investigates disappearances, and grapples with the demonic power pulsing within her. Itโ€™s all set in a richly imagined fantasy world. The magical systems are well thought-out, the dialogue feels anime-authentic, and the tone blends charm with stakes in a way that kept me engaged throughout.

What I loved most was Chiiโ€™s voice is that itโ€™s innocent without being naive and determined without becoming jaded. Whether sheโ€™s facing bandits, rival mages, or emotional betrayal, her spirit remains luminous. The supporting castโ€”Akila, Leon, Samir, Ethanโ€”each bring different energies to the story, and some of their arcs genuinely surprised me. That said, I did find a few scenes leaning into genre tropes a little heavily, and the pacing, particularly around the middle chapters, occasionally stalled.

For fans of Sword Art Online, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, or The Rising of the Shield Hero, Chii will feel both familiar and fresh. And with its hint of darker themes like demonic influence, moral ambiguity, and emotional sacrifice, itโ€™s clear that this is only the beginning of a much engaging saga. I am looking forward to Volume 2!

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Yonah and Devorah’s Traveling Music Theater by Suze Leonie is a whimsical yet poignant tale that effortlessly blends elements of magical realism with a reflective exploration of artistic legacy and personal discovery. Set against the backdrop of a vibrant yet meticulously portrayed European art scene, author Leonie’s writing is thoroughly captivating.

At the heart of the narrative are Yonah and Devorah, two exquisitely crafted puppets whose destinies are intricately woven into the life of Eli Schmidt, an eccentric artist grappling with familial expectations and his grandmother’s complex legacy. The author expertly explores the enchantingly surreal as well as the achingly human parts, crafting characters that resonate with genuine emotion and vulnerability.

The plot intricately unfolds as Eli embarks on an ambitious and sometimes perilous quest to reunite the puppets and restore their music theater. Through Eliโ€™s transformative journey, the author beautifully articulates themes of obsession, identity, and the power of art to both imprison and liberate. The novelโ€™s richly descriptive prose brings every scene to life, immersing readers in the sights, sounds, and emotional backdrop Eli traverses.

While the pacing occasionally wavers due to moments of introspective depth, the author’s narrative ultimately thrives because of its thoughtful exploration of deeper truths beneath the fantastical veneer. The humor is sharp and well-placed, often balancing the more intense moments of emotional and psychological exploration.

Overall, Yonah and Devorah’s Traveling Music Theater is a captivating read, expertly crafted by author Leonie with care and sophistication. Itโ€™s a heartfelt testament to the enduring power of storytelling, heritage, and the inextricable bond between creator and creation. I highly recommend it to readers who appreciate profound narratives wrapped in whimsical charm.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Heart of Resistance is a richly imagined steampunk odyssey set against the backdrop of imperial tyranny and crumbling rebellion. As someone who thrives on character-driven narratives and deeply layered world-building, I found this novel thoroughly immersive, even when it treaded familiar thematic ground.

Told in a multi-POV structure, the story braids together the lives of Jannaโ€”a disillusioned rebel mechanic; Elsieโ€”a workhouse orphan desperate for a life beyond servitude; and Arthur Pendingtonโ€”a once-loyal imperial captain turned insurgent. Each voice brings a distinct texture to the story. Jannaโ€™s inner turmoil, especially, stood out to meโ€”her gritted realism, biting wit, and the slowly unraveling weight of her past were brilliantly done. There’s a raw, authentic edge to her arc that reminded me of classic literary rebels, but with a modern grit.

The prose walks the line between efficient and occasionally ornate, particularly in describing the cityscapes of Gorand or the infernal machinery of dreadnoughts. The scenes involving airships and skydocks were kinetic and cinematic, and the combat sequences (especially the boarding and escape scenes) had real tension. I appreciated how the authors avoided glamorizing war; they instead chose to emphasize the psychological wear and the slow erasure of ideals, which felt honest.

If I had a critique, it would be about pacing (my old nemesis). The novel begins with a sharp hook and builds well, but midsectionsโ€”especially the early Elsie chaptersโ€”sag slightly. I found myself yearning for a tighter edit in parts to match the intensity of the opening and climax. Some emotional beats also felt rushed when they could have been lingered on for greater impact. That said, the world itself never faltersโ€”it feels lived-in and vividly rendered.

Overall, this is a strong debut from the Griffeys. It carries the weight of classic resistance literature while still feeling timely. For readers who love character-driven science fantasy with rebellion, found family, and just the right amount of grit, The Heart of Resistance is well worth your time.

Mana Ray’s Space Diaryย Entry #1: To whoever may find thisโ€”
They told us perfection was the key to happiness, to prosperity, to saving our god. They told us magic was a lie, a danger, a curse that would destroy everything we hold sacred. I believed them. I believed in the rules, the scores, the Cult of Perfect Life. I believed in everything… until they cast me out.
Now I see the cracks in our perfect worldโ€”polluted skies, dying forests, storms that rage harder every year. The government says magic is to blame, but what if the magic they fear is the only thing that can save us? What if the ones we call savages hold the answers weโ€™ve been forbidden to ask?

Iโ€™ve left the city behind, abandoned the life I was taught to worship, and walked into the forest in search of something more. They say the gods of the wild are dangerous. They say I shouldnโ€™t trust them. But they also said perfection would save us, and that was a lie.
I donโ€™t know what Iโ€™ll find out here. I donโ€™t know if Iโ€™ll survive. But I do know one thing: the life I left behind wasnโ€™t living at all.
If youโ€™re reading this, maybe youโ€™ve been searching, too. Maybe youโ€™re ready to see whatโ€™s beyond the lies weโ€™ve been told.
This is my story. This is the truth of what Iโ€™ve found. Are you ready to believe in something greater?

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Mana Ray: Summer Magic by Julia Maslova is a captivating and thought-provoking novel that cleverly intertwines elements of dystopian science fiction with enchanting fantasy, crafting a compelling narrative that examines societal expectations, class divides, and ecological themes. Author Maslova deftly builds a world both familiar and uniquely imaginative, introducing readers to Odageaโ€”a planet ruled by stringent class structures, technological advancements, and an oppressive cult of perfection.

At the heart of the narrative is Mana Ray, whose journey is as much internal as it is external. Mana, driven by aspirations of an ideal life, grapples with the rigid expectations of her society and the truths lurking beneath its seemingly flawless faรงade. The author shines in her depiction of Manaโ€™s complexity; the character is at once relatable, vulnerable, and fiercely determined. Her struggles made me reflect on my own definitions of success and perfection.

Author Maslov juxtaposes the sterile, technological world of Midland with the magical existence of the indigenous tribes, creating a powerful commentary on environmental consciousness and spiritual harmony. The narrative is rich with vivid imagery and symbolism, particularly evident in the beautifully described rituals and landscapes, which serve as poignant contrasts to the controlled environments of Midland.

While the narrative is gripping and the world-building impressive, some segments may feel slightly heavy with exposition, especially around the workings of Odageaโ€™s society. However, the depth and thoughtfulness embedded in the storytelling largely balance the pacing concerns.

Overall, Mana Ray: Summer Magic is a striking exploration of identity, societal pressure, and ecological balance. Author Maslov’s engaging prose, combined with meaningful themes and well-developed characters, makes it a must-read for fans of dystopian narratives infused with fantasy elements. Highly recommended for those who enjoy stories that challenge and inspire deeper contemplation.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Of Gods and Men by Harrison F. Kraus is one of those rare debut fantasy novels that manages to feel both classic in scope and refreshingly contemporary in voice. I absolutely love ambitious worldbuilding, and author Kraus doesnโ€™t hold back. From the icy intensity of the Sicarius hunting dragon-like Serpentes in Aezigar, to the quiet heartbreak of Samuel Turnerโ€™s humble teenage life unraveling in rural Pennsylvania, the dual narrative arcs are handled with surprising nuance.

What stood out most to me is how the novel explores the human condition through both grounded and mythic lenses. Sam, in particular, is a character who grows on you, his discomfort in his own skin, his awkward, uncertain crush on Kelly, and the surreal changes happening in his body reminded me of early King meets Percy Jackson but with a more literary edge. Thereโ€™s a subtle emotional current running through the domestic scenes that really worked for me, even as the broader fantasy arc began to kick in.

The prose is confident, cinematic at timesโ€”especially during the Sicariusโ€™s icy, violent questsโ€”and the structure is intelligently paced, divided cleanly into โ€œpartsโ€ that mirror thematic progression. However, I felt the book occasionally overextended itself, particularly in the slower exposition-heavy sections, and some of the dialogue between younger characters could’ve been more organic.

Still, this is an author with undeniable promise, and Iโ€™m really curious to see where Book 2 leads. For readers who enjoy morally complex anti-heroes, mythic beasts, and parallel worlds brimming with elemental power, Of Gods and Men offers a bold and thoughtful entry point into a much larger saga.

Publisher: Earnshaw Books
Blurb:
Can you save the world with a dance? Can you call dragons with music? And can you do this when no-one believes that such things exist or are possible?
The dragons of Tianya guard the balance between the forces of order and randomness, of heaven and earth, and when things are stable, no-one remembers they exist. But any disturbance can create tragedy, and only the mysterious dance to wake the dragon, performed at the ancient site of Zamai, can save the world. And the only person who knows the dance in this new age is Shengli.

Shengli lives in a remote village with her friends, her dog companion, and a wise old neighbour who is one of the last in Tianya to understand the ancient ways. She embarks on a dangerous mission, with her friends and the mysterious Renzi, to perform the dance at Zamai and the journey offers trials and tests that demand courage, cunning, and comradeship.
With echoes of Lewis, Tolkein, and Pullman, but with a wholly original voice, this is a classic quest adventure in a fresh setting that explores contemporary themes in a timeless format.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A Dance to Wake a Dragon by Richard Pratt is a beautiful, lyrical, and utterly heartwarming fantasy adventure that swept me away from the very first page. Reading it felt like stepping into a snow-laden, otherworldly village where ancient traditions, stubborn young hearts, and mystical forces weave together into an extremely powerful narrative.

At the heart of the story is Shengli, a spirited, brave girl who dances not just for joy but, ultimately, to save her world. Through her friendship with her clever fox-like dog Boken (who’s now one of my favorite fictional animal companions!) and the bonds she shares with her village and friends, Shengliโ€™s journey is about hope and honoring the wisdom of the past in a world eager to forget it.

The writing is tender yet intelligent, laced with whimsical humor (especially through Bokenโ€™s delightful โ€œconversationsโ€) and thoughtful insights. Author Prattโ€™s prose has that rare timeless quality which reads like a classic fable but remains fresh and vibrant.

Thereโ€™s a subtle depth running beneath the playful surface, about cycles of life, the price of forgetting our roots, and the small acts of bravery that change the world. I also loved how the book gently critiques modern cynicism without being preachy and simply lets the magic of tradition speak for itself.

If I had any tiny critique, it would be that the beginning meanders slightly (though charmingly) before the main quest kicks into motion, but honestly, I didnโ€™t mind spending extra time in Shengliโ€™s snow-covered world.

If youโ€™re looking for a heartful, exquisitely written fantasy full of dancing, dragons, and characters youโ€™ll miss long after the book is over, A Dance to Wake a Dragon is pure magic. Itโ€™s the kind of story that feels like a warm fire on a winter night: comforting, glowing, and unforgettable.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Hidden Witch by Tony Jaehrling picks up right where Reluctant Queen left off, thrusting us into the Badlands with Tamyr, a protagonist who is rapidly evolving from reluctant monarch to formidable force. What struck me most in this installment is how Author Jaehrling expands the worldbuilding with detailed magical systems, various witch factions, and yes, demons that are both terrifying and compelling.

The pacing is brisk, the action scenes tight, and the emotional threads are handled with care. Tamyrโ€™s inner turmoil of her self-doubt, anger, and resilience, feels authentic and hard-earned. Thereโ€™s also a layered richness to the supporting cast. Lowen especially is a standout being a pale-haired witch walking a moral tightrope.

Author Jaehrling does a great job of making this a darker, more introspective middle chapter. If Reluctant Queen was about legacy, Hidden Witch is about survival, and preparing to fight back. I knocked off one star only because I wanted slightly more breathing space between high-stakes scenes, a moment or two more for emotional reflection and character interaction, but honestly, this is a gripping, propulsive read.

If you’re a fan of morally complex fantasy with strong female leads, Hidden Witch absolutely delivers.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Thereโ€™s epic fantasy, and then thereโ€™s Baelon. Author Robert A. Walker returns with Two Crowns, Three Blades, an emotionally rich and expansively plotted tale that refuses to be boxed into the usual tropes. This book took me deeper into the world he so vividly carved in Six Moons, Seven Gods, but this time, the narrative heart is Sibil Dunn, and what a heart she has.

Author Walker has this unique ability to blend the elegance of high fantasy with the grittiness of lived trauma. Sibilโ€™s journey that is part grief-soaked pilgrimage, part battle cry, is full of tenderness, fury, and painfully honest introspection. From dreamlike forest encounters to political maneuvering in war-torn castles, every chapter feels like a painting: atmospheric, emotionally charged, and tinged with bittersweet tension.

The prose flows beautifully, it is lyrical yet grounded, and I truly appreciated how much depth was given to the emotional fallout of war and vengeance. Author Walker doesnโ€™t shy away from the weight of loss. He lets his characters breathe through it. But what really made this book sing was its handling of legacy, both personal and political. We see young people like Sibil and Tristan trying to reconcile inherited grief with the need to carve out their own purpose. There’s an almost Shakespearean tension between duty and identity, particularly in the climactic moments between Sibil and King Axil. Itโ€™s subtle, powerful, and brilliantly done.

If I had to nitpick (as an editor, I must), I might say that the middle sagged just slightly under the weight of dense political strategizing. But thatโ€™s a small matter in the grand scope of what Author Walker accomplishes here. This is what fantasy should be: grand in scale, intimate in voice, and unafraid to ask hard questions about loyalty, love, and the cost of courage.

I highly recommend it to fans of Robin Hobb, Tad Williams, and emotionally intelligent fantasy in the vein of The Priory of the Orange Tree or The Faithful and the Fallen. This book (and series) is a must-read!

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Sometimes, the simplest premises can hold the deepest emotional weight, and The King’s Pen Pal by Peter Osterlund proves just that. This is a beautifully written tale of longing, legacy, and the need to truly live before time runs out.

At its heart, The King’s Pen Pal is the story of King Deveric, a ruler bound by duty and sickness, whose only escape comes through letters exchanged with a mysterious pen pal, Karness. As his illness worsens and his days are numbered, Deveric makes a daring decision, to shed his title, leave the walls of his castle, and experience the kingdom heโ€™s ruled but never truly known. With the help of his trusted sorcerer, Geris, he embarks on a journey that is as heartwarming as it is bittersweet.

Author Osterlundโ€™s prose is fluid and immersive, effortlessly pulling the reader into Devericโ€™s world. The banter between the king and Geris adds humor and warmth, making their companionship one of the bookโ€™s strongest elements. Devericโ€™s letters to Karness are particularly moving, revealing his deepest regrets, dreams, and desires in a way that makes their connection feel realistic and personal.

The novel beautifully balances introspection with adventure, blending fantasy elements seamlessly into its character-driven narrative. The worldbuilding is understated but effective, allowing the reader to focus on the emotional depth of the story rather than being overwhelmed with lore.

If I had to nitpick, the pacing in the middle slows down a bit, and I wished for a slightly deeper exploration of Karness’ character beyond her role as an unseen anchor for Devericโ€™s journey. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise moving and heartfelt novel.

For readers who love stories of self-discovery, poignant friendships, and a touch of magic, The King’s Pen Pal is a memorable story worth reading. Itโ€™s a beautiful book that stays with you, reminding us all to embrace life before itโ€™s too late.

Six Moons, Seven Gods is book one in The Legends of Baelon.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Every once in a while, a fantasy novel comes along that reminds me why I love the genre. Six Moons, Seven Gods is that book. Robert A. Walker delivers a masterfully woven tale filled with deception, shifting alliances, and a dark, immersive world that immediately pulled me in. With an intricate plot that unfolds like a dangerous game of chess, this book is a perfect blend of intrigue, adventure, and richly developed characters.

From the moment weโ€™re introduced to the Takers Guild and their sinister plans, I knew I was in for a ride. The story quickly escalates, intertwining the fates of thieves, assassins, warriors, and rulers in ways that are unexpected yet brilliantly executed. The prescient woman and her enigmatic daughter add an element of mysticism that keeps the narrative layered and engaging. And then thereโ€™s Rolft Aernsโ€”his return to the palace with a personal vendetta is one of my favorite character arcs in the book. His internal struggles and battle-worn wisdom give the story an emotional weight that balances out the high-stakes action.

What truly stands out is Walkerโ€™s ability to craft tension. The world of Baelon is brimming with corruption, power struggles, and secrets hidden away in every shadow. The pacing is tight, the fight sequences are cinematic, and the dialogue is sharp. Thereโ€™s an almost poetic quality to the prose, making every scene feel immersive. The political machinations, the cunning moves of the Guild, and the betrayals that follow are a testament to how well the story is structured.

If thereโ€™s one thing I love, itโ€™s a fantasy novel that respects its readerโ€™s intelligence, one that doesnโ€™t spoon-feed but instead trusts you to piece together the complicated world the author has presented. Six Moons, Seven Gods does exactly that. Itโ€™s clever, gripping, and utterly absorbing. By the time I turned the last page, I was already eager for the next installment. If you love fantasy with high-stakes storytelling, morally complex characters, and a world that feels alive, this is a must-read!

One that carries her across the sea to the mist-shrouded Scottish Highlands, where ancient legends breathe, magic hums just beneath the surface, and family secrets refuse to stay silent.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Whispers of the Selkie by Lisa A. Moore is a beautifully atmospheric tale that blends Scottish folklore, family secrets, and reluctant destiny into an enchanting and immersive read. From the misty coastlines of Maine to the hauntingly beautiful Scottish Highlands, the novel integrates magic and mystery in a poetic way.

Morwenna Brightwood is the kind of protagonist I loveโ€”strong yet hesitant, grounded yet drawn to something bigger than herself. When she receives a mysterious letter that pulls her across the sea, her journey into a world of selkie legends and ancestral power begins. What I appreciated most was how real Morwenna feltโ€”sheโ€™s not immediately fearless or eager to embrace her heritage. She questions, resists, and struggles with the idea of expectation, which makes her journey all the more compelling. Her dynamic with her sister Ava is another highlightโ€”thereโ€™s warmth, loyalty, and just the right amount of tension that makes their bond feel genuine.

Mooreโ€™s writing is lush and lyrical, painting the setting with vivid imagery that makes you feel the salt on your skin and hear the whispers of the waves. The Scottish Highlands come alive with an almost sentient presence, making the world feel as much a character as Morwenna herself. The mythology is woven in seamlessly, giving the story a sense of depth and history. If thereโ€™s one small critique, itโ€™s that some parts of the pacing felt a little unevenโ€”certain revelations and moments of action could have been spread out more for maximum impact.

Overall, Whispers of the Selkie is a beautifully written and immersive story perfect for readers who love fantasy grounded in mythology, family ties, and the lure of the unknown. Itโ€™s a book that stays with you long after the final page is turned. If you love atmospheric, folklore-driven stories with complex heroines, this one is definitely worth picking up.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Simon Grey and the Curse of the Dragon God by Charles Kowalski is an exciting and exceptionally immersive adventure novel that takes readers on a fascinating journey through historical Japan. As someone who thoroughly enjoys historical fiction and fantasy, I found this book to be a delightful mix of both genres. Kowalski skillfully intertwines Japanese mythology with action, creating a world that’s both captivating and educational.

Simon, the protagonist, is endearing and relatable, and his encounters with various historical and mythical figures keep the story engaging. The book blends elements of Japanese folklore, such as yokai and samurai, into the narrative, adding layers of depth and intrigue. Itโ€™s the kind of adventure that keeps you turning pages, eager to see what magical or historical surprise lies ahead.

One of my favorite moments is when Simon and Oyuki meet Otohime at the undersea palace, Ryugujo. The vivid description of the magical underwater world is mesmerizing, and it truly showcases the authorโ€™s strength in world-building.

If you’re a fan of fast-paced, well-crafted historical fantasy with a unique cultural twist, Simon Grey and the Curse of the Dragon God is definitely a book you should pick up. Itโ€™s perfect for both younger readers and adults who love adventure, mythology, and a dash of history.

She embodies qualities of gentleness and loving trust that he has never found among his own kind. This makes her far more desirable to him than any creature of darkness could ever be. Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Evolving Ecstasy is the third book in Almost Human: The First Trilogy by Melanie Nowak (the first book is Fatal Infatuation and the second one is Lost Reflections). Evolving Ecstasy is an exhilarating and emotional ride, especially for fans of character-driven paranormal romance like me. I found myself completely drawn into the complex relationships and the heart-pounding tension between Felicity and Cain.

The book does a fantastic job balancing action with deep emotional moments, especially as Felicity grapples with her feelings for Cain and the dangers that come with loving a vampire. What I loved most was the evolution of their relationship, particularly how Cainโ€™s internal struggles as a vampire play a central role in their dynamic. The scenes between them are both tender and thrilling, making you root for them even as you fear for their survival.

Nowakโ€™s writing shines in this installment, especially when describing the complexity of Cainโ€™s character. As one of the more memorable lines goes: โ€œTo drink from a host, for a vampire, is the ultimate experience. Just as sex may be for a human being. Blood, that is true ecstasy.โ€ This quote perfectly encapsulates the intense emotions that run throughout the novel.

While the book is packed with action, particularly as Felicity faces off against zombies and vampire enemies, itโ€™s the quieter moments of vulnerability that stand out. One of my favorite quotes is when Cain reassures Felicity: โ€œFor you, Iโ€™d fight Satan himself.โ€ The devotion and passion between these characters elevate the stakes and make the story even more compelling.

Overall, Evolving Ecstasy delivers all the suspense, romance, and supernatural intrigue youโ€™d want from a paranormal series. I give it 5 stars for its gripping narrative and emotional depth. The Almost Human: The First Trilogy by Melanie Nowak is an addictive blend of romance, danger, and the supernatural. With captivating characters like Felicity and the enigmatic vampire Cain, the trilogy takes readers on an emotional journey through love, loss, and survival in a world filled with vampires, zombies, and moral dilemmas. It is perfect for fans of paranormal romance who crave deep character development and heart-racing action!

Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

If you enjoyed Fatal Infatuation, you’re in for another exciting ride with Lost Reflections, the second book in The Almost Human Trilogy. Melanie Nowak delivered a fantastic mix of romance, danger, and supernatural intrigue that kept me hooked from start to finish.

This time around, Felicity is grappling with her feelings for Cain, the mysterious and brooding vampire whoโ€™s managed to capture both her heart and her trust. But, of course, things are never that simple! Felicity is starting to wonder whether Cainโ€™s vampire venom is clouding her judgment, and it doesnโ€™t help that sheโ€™s also caught up in a deadly game involving vengeful vampires and zombie minions. Talk about complicated! One thingโ€™s for sure: her heart may be lost to Cain, but the bigger question is, will she lose her life too?

The best part of this book is definitely the deeper dive into Cainโ€™s backstory. His past is both fascinating and dark, and we get a much clearer picture of why he is the way he is. Itโ€™s both enthralling and, at times, a little unsettling. And Felicityโ€™s struggle to figure out whether their connection is real or just a result of his vampire nature adds an emotional layer that keeps the reader invested in their relationship.

Thereโ€™s a lot more action in this one compared to the first book, and the pacing really picks up. There was vengeful vampires, zombies, and plenty of suspense to keep me on my toes. The romance is still at the heart of the story, but the stakes feel higher now, and Felicity is forced to make some tough decisions about what she really wants.

Overall, Lost Reflections is a great continuation of the series. The characters are even more developed, the action ramps up, and the romance has a darker, more complex edge to it. If you’re into vampire stories with a good mix of danger, drama, and romance, you’re definitely going to enjoy this one. Can’t wait to see how things unfold in the final book!

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Reluctant Queen by Tony Jaehrling, the first book in the Betrayal series, is a solid start to a gripping fantasy series. This book is. ablend of everything good: reluctant heroes, political drama, and kingdoms on the brink of war.

The story kicks off with the death of King Rhyman, whoโ€™s held the kingdom of Lorynthia together for decades. With the throne now empty, things quickly start to unravel. And then thereโ€™s Tamyr Thimpor, the kingโ€™s daughter, who really doesnโ€™t want to take on the role of queen. Sheโ€™s not your typical, eager-to-lead heroine, and thatโ€™s what makes her journey so interesting.

I really enjoyed the world-building in this book. Lorynthia is a kingdom filled with different regions and people, from the Dragon Mountains to the Red Desert. The author does a great job of making you feel like youโ€™re right there in the middle of it all. You can really feel the tension as the kingdom teeters on the edge of war, with enemies lurking in the shadows.

There are a few moments where the pacing slows down a bit, but thatโ€™s mostly because thereโ€™s a lot of groundwork being laid for future books in the series. Even so, the story keept me engaged with well-developed characters and a few twists that kept me guessing. And by the end, I was definitely ready for the next book!

Overall, Reluctant Queen is a great read if you like your fantasy with a bit of political intrigue and a heroine whoโ€™s not quite sure sheโ€™s ready for the spotlight. Tamyrโ€™s journey is just beginning, and I canโ€™t wait to see where it takes her next!

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Fatal Infatuation by Melanie Nowak is an amazing vampire romance novel, the first in the Almost Human trilogy, with a mix of suspense and exceptional characterisation.

The story centres around Felicity, this shy and kind-hearted college student who suddenly finds herself in a very complicated situation. Not only does she catch the eye of a charming human, but also Cainโ€”a brooding elder vampire who has his own messy past to deal with. Cainโ€™s not your typical vampire though. Heโ€™s trying to make peace with his past sins and even works to help other vampires coexist with humans. One line from Cain that really stood out to me was: โ€œIn losing my life, I found my purpose.โ€ That just sums up his whole internal struggle so well.

I loved the mix of romance, danger, and a bit of moral dilemma in this book. Felicity is trying to figure out her feelings while literally navigating a world with vampires and zombies, and honestly, I was here for it! Thereโ€™s a part where she says, โ€œNavigating friendships and desires was already hard enoughโ€”now thereโ€™s the small matter of survival,โ€ and I think that perfectly captures the vibe of the story.

The characters, especially Cain, are really well-developed. Heโ€™s not just a brooding vampireโ€”thereโ€™s a lot more to him, and you canโ€™t help but root for him. And then thereโ€™s Sindy, a seductive vampire who just loves stirring up trouble, especially when it comes to Felicityโ€™s new friend, Ben.

The only thing I would say is that some parts were a little predictable, but honestly, it didnโ€™t take away from my overall enjoyment. Thereโ€™s plenty of tension and excitement to keep you turning the pages. If youโ€™re into vampires with some emotional depth and a good mix of romance and action, Fatal Infatuation is a fantastic start to the series. I canโ€™t wait to see what happens next!

Gods of IMAGO by Greg Belliveau is the second book in the IMAGO series. This dark and gripping novel follows the journey of the Leviathan, who was once an apex predator of the sea but is now forced to adapt to a hostile land where he must navigate warfare, alliances, and personal transformation.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Drakomunda by Guy Quartley is a dark and thrilling journey that took me deep into a world of apocalyptic landscapes and mystical intrigue. Quartley’s vivid storytelling had me hooked from the start, as I followed the protagonist’s harrowing journey from the dry city of Kul to the haunting port of Fling. The narrative, laden with a deadly plague and supernatural elements, was both intense and captivating.

The characters in this novel truly brought the story to life. Each character, especially the enigmatic sorceresses Bronwyn and Phaedra, was richly developed and added a fascinating layer to the dark world Quartley created. Their complex desires and emotions made the story more than just a fantasy; it was a deep exploration of the human condition amidst chaos.

However, the unrelenting darkness of the book was at times overwhelming. The constant shadow of doom, while impressively portrayed, sometimes overshadowed the novel’s more subtle nuances. Despite this, Drakomunda stands out for its compelling blend of horror and fantasy, wrapped in a narrative thatโ€™s both complex and deeply human.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

“Legends of Heraldale IV: Our Final Act” by Brian McNatt is an absolute delight and a brilliant finale to a series that has been close to my heart since the first book. McNatt’s storytelling prowess truly shines in this installment, blending a richly imagined world, vibrant characters, and a story that had me hooked from the very beginning.

I was completely immersed in the world McNatt created. The vivid descriptions and intricate details made the world of Heraldale feel alive and tangible. Itโ€™s rare to find a book where the setting feels like a character in its own right, but McNatt pulls this off effortlessly. The depth of the lore and the attention to detail in constructing this world are simply breathtaking.

The characters, many of whom we’ve grown to love since the first book, are the soul of this story. McNatt has a way of making each character feel like an old friend, with their quirks, growth, and journeys. Seeing how theyโ€™ve evolved over the series and how their stories intertwine in this final act was incredibly satisfying. Itโ€™s like catching up with old friends and seeing how far theyโ€™ve come.

The pacing of the book is just perfect. McNatt strikes a brilliant balance, weaving tension and excitement throughout the story in a way that kept me turning pages, yet also allowing space for quieter, more reflective moments. Itโ€™s a rollercoaster ride that had me on the edge of my seat but also gave me moments to pause and soak in the journey.

Overall, “Legends of Heraldale IV: Our Final Act” is a phenomenal read. It’s a book that not only concludes the series with a bang but also reminds me why I fell in love with McNattโ€™s world in the first place. Itโ€™s a heartfelt goodbye to a world and characters that Iโ€™ve cherished, and I couldnโ€™t have asked for a more fitting end.
