About the Book

Britney is a young, extremely malnourished child, who comes from a poor family with an abusive father. Her mother does everything she can to protect her daughter from her husband, receiving the brunt of the aggressive beatings herself. The girl barely speaks, afraid of being overheard by the wrong person, and the only words she knows are the few repeated words her mother uses to calm her after a fight. A total of three words in all, namely โ€“ Whisper, Britney, and Ma. There is a very private, sheltered spot in the nearby forest which Britney uses as a place to hide away if ever her mother has to spend the day walking into the nearest town to purchase supplies or to trade goods. They have discreet, non-verbal signals which they use to keep the area hidden and make sure that Britney is secure (far away from Paโ€™s prying eyes). On one such day, Britney hears unusual sounds and is terrified that her father has found out about their system, but the surprise turns out to be just a lonesome little puppy. The girl quickly becomes friends with the stray, instantly joining forces in their solitude, only ever meeting in the secret place where they share such a deeply silent, unspoken bond. This continues until Ma helps her only child run away for good, tearfully leaving Britney to fend for herself in the best way she knows how. The adoring puppy (promptly being referred to as Whisper) unexpectedly follows the girl, and together they set off on a journey that will forever change their livesโ€ฆ

Excerpt Reveal: AWAKE: Notes from the Quiet Hours by S.A. Sterling

Welcome to the TRB Lounge. Today, we are featuring the excerpt from author S.A. Sterling‘s latest release, AWAKEย โ€“ Notes from the Quiet Hours.

About the Book

2:47 a.m. Again.
For two years, she woke in the quiet hoursโ€”when the house slept, when the world felt suspended between night and morning. In that stillness, she began to write.
AWAKE is a collection of sixty nights lived in real time: the hum of insomnia, the weight of perimenopause, the questions that surface at 3 a.m. when defenses are down.
These pages donโ€™t offer solutions. They offer presence.
For anyone whoโ€™s ever felt alone in the dark hours, this book is company.

Book Excerpt

Before

I don’t sleep through the night anymore.

Started sometime in my late forties. 2:30 a.m. felt like a normal time to wake up. Sometimes 3:00. Sometimes 4:00.

I tried the rules. Magnesium. No screens. Worked sometimes. Mostly didn’t.

This isn’t a book about fixing it. I don’t know how to fix it. Maybe you do. Maybe you don’t. Maybe you’re reading this at 3 a.m. because you can’t sleep either.

I wrote these over two years. In real time. When I was awake and everyone else was asleep.

If you’re awake tooโ€”you’re not alone.

How to read this book

Read one entry or ten.

Start anywhere.

Stop when you feel less alone.

Night 1 โ€” The Buzz

2:47 a.m.

That hum again. Not a sound, a feeling. Low and steady under my skin.

My legs feel electric, like they want to walk somewhere.

Slippers. Bathroom. Back to bed.

Five minutes. Ten. Nothing.

Check the time. Shit.

I’m up.

Lemon. Ginger. Salt. Steam fogging the mug.

Desk lamp on. Laptop glow.

Bedroom door closed behind me. Lino probably heard me leave.

But he’ll stay in bed until morning. Unlike me.

Anthony’s face flashes in my mind. Him holding the baby.

I should be happy. I am happy. I’m just tired.

Still awake.

Night 6 โ€” Both Languages

2:53 a.m.

My thoughts switch languages mid-sentence.

English. Then Italian. Then back.

I don’t choose. It just happens.

Sometimes worry speaks Italian.

Sometimes English.

Comfort doesn’t have a language. Or has both.

I dream in both too.

My brain can’t pick a side.

Neither can I.

Night 8

3:39 a.m.

My chest is hot. My feet are freezing.

I’m both sweating and shivering.

Perimenopause, probably.

I hate that word. Too clinical for what it feels like.

Like someone else is driving my body and won’t tell me where we’re going.

Lino still in bed.

He’ll say I look tired in the morning. I’ll nod.

We won’t talk about the rest. Both of us knowing I’m lying.

I sip ginger water. Bitter.

Hope it burns the hormones out of me.

It doesn’t.

Night 20 โ€” Resi’s Awake Too

3:14 a.m.

My phone lights up.

Resi. My sister.

You awake?

I type back. Yep.

Three dots. Then: This is ridiculous.

I almost laugh.

She’s five minutes away in her village. Bruno and Gabriel asleep in their beds.

Both of us awake in the dark.

It helps. Knowing I’m not the only one.

Go back to bed I type.

You first she sends back.

Neither of us will.

Night 47

3:42 a.m.

I’m so tired of this.

Two years of waking up at 3 a.m. and I’m still here. Still awake. Still typing at this desk.

When does it get better? Does it get better?

Everyone talks about acceptance like it’s this peaceful thing you arrive at.

I don’t feel peaceful. I feel exhausted.

Tomorrow the alarm at 6:30. The coffee that doesn’t help. The fog.

My eyes burn. My back hurts. I just want to sleep like a normal person.

The lemon water’s gone cold. Again. I drink it anyway.

Maybe tomorrow. Maybe tomorrow I’ll sleep through the night.

Probably not.

Night 57 โ€” So Quiet

3:59 a.m.

The quiet’s different tonight.

Not lonely. Just… full.

I can hear my pulse. My breathing.

I’m not trying to fix anything. Just sitting here. Breathing.

Usually that feels too loud. Tonight it’s okay.

Maybe peace looks boring.

I’ll take it.

You’ve Read 6 Nights.

There are 54 more.

More raw nights. More honest moments. More company in the dark hours.

Continue the journey:
Paperback: $11.99 [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FXXHH9M9]
Ebook: $3.99 [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FXTSKP6B]

“This is definitely a great read, especially as we get olderโ€”it gets harder. It feels good to know there’s others that go through the same things.”
โ€” Tina, Amazon Reader

Thank you for being awake with me.

About the Book

This novel continues where theย Night of the Fishermanย left off and is packed with suspense, fantasy, and romance as well as elements of science fiction with shrouded references to quantum physics. The characters are instantly transported between different realms in the cosmos using wormholes where the entry and exit ports are defined by clocks composed of mysterious substances. Each clock is the mirror image of the other, with each working backwards from the other.

We follow the exploits of the intriguing dark character known as the Old Clock Peddler, who sells paired clocks to unsuspecting consumers in different worlds causing interesting and unexpected interactions between diverse populations of beings. All the while, the Peddler has mysterious interactions with the characters caught up in his intergalactic web of intrigue, which include Lexicon, the principality of Yore and the land of the Druids.

Intrigue continues to follow two of the main characters fromย Night of the Fisherman, Fish (a.k.a. the Fisherman) and Kara in the 1950โ€™s-1960โ€™s suburban town of Lexicon. They along with other neighbors now have to contend with the power-hungry Surf, the surviving son of Poppa, who previously terrorized the local neighborhood and beyond. All the while, the character known as the dark Entity lurks about ready to do Surfโ€™s bidding.

A secret society in Lexicon known as the City Fathers anoints Surf as their new Boss in their quest to amass more power and wealth, after the death of Poppa. A shady slimy lawyer named McAlister Bilge aids Surf in his quest for more power and wealth. Other neighbors such as little Elmo get caught up in the intrigue as well as the old man Mr. Ages, now reunited with his long lost son after several decades, Tommy, who once served as King of Yore under the name of Twede.

A host of new characters are introduced, including three college students, one of which believes he understands the physics of instantaneous intergalactic transport, while another desires Kara, the Fishermanโ€™s girlfriend, to be his own. Frank Knightlite, a heroic figure in the small town of Lexicon, is known to shed light within the bowels of darkness. Aisling is a young Irish lass whose family got marooned in the strange world of mutated descendants of the Druids, courtesy of one of the Peddlerโ€™s wormholes. She gets rescued by the Fisherman and Frank Knightlite, who use a recently reestablished porthole to bring her back to Lexicon and eventually to that big green island across the sea to be united with her surviving relatives. Frank Knightlite has a clandestine encounter with Leena, the terrified and neglected young wife of Surf, in order to extract needed information from her.

In the Kingdom of Yore, an ensuing power struggle is in the works as Renigade a wayward Elder had escaped the palace dungeon and seeks to solidify a power sharing pact with Surf. The small gnomish person Georgos contributes to the drama as he again is put into service by his dethroned king Twede, now known as Tommy Ages. Twede reunites with his love Tarala when the porthole between Lexicon and Yore is reestablished by the Peddler.

It is later disclosed that Surf has an estranged brother who covets what Surf has and is determined to claim all that Surf inherited from Poppa as his birthright. Finally, the novel climaxes at the scene of the lake of fire, a huge cauldron-like depression in the planetary surface of Yore. Here, Surf plans to send his prisoners to their demise in the same way his Poppa attempted in theย Night of the Fisherman. However, Surf does not count on having to contend with his brother as they confront each other near the precipice of the fiery lake, as the prisoners look on while the drama unfolds in unexpected and suspenseful ways.

About The Author

Bernt Erik Bjontegard

Bernt โ€œErikโ€ Bjontegard is the inventor of the patented, award-winning Spark Compassโ„ข, a Contextually Intelligentโ„ข communication platform used globally to deliver the right message to the right person at the right time and place. As founder and CEO of Total Communicator Solutions, Inc., Erik has led innovative deployments at events like Wimbledon and Americaโ€™s Cup, for brands like Puma and Coca-Cola, and even for public health initiatives in the UK. He holds multiple pioneering patents, many of which have been cited by industry giants, including IBM, Apple, Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm.

Originally from Norway, Erik began his journey as a snow shuffler and windsurf instructor, later earning a full scholarship to the University of Salford in the UK. He became a mechanical engineer, designing deep-sea robotics before working with NASA on the Space Shuttle programโ€”something he proudly recalls with his favorite phrase: โ€œI used to be a rocket scientist!โ€ He later certified aircraft designs for Boeing and Airbus and has contributed to technologies that are now part of 5G infrastructure.

About the Book

A question to ponder: are we as humans pre-programmed to โ€œfollow in our fatherโ€™s footsteps?โ€ Is there something inherent in our heritage? Do we repeat what our forefathers and mothers did?

And if so, can we apply these inherited cross-generational learning methods as we invent the next generations of intelligent systems? Rather than creating AI that is artificial and intended to replace human work, can we create intelligent systems that AUGMENT the humanโ€™s work and support him or her? Can we invent intelligent systems that learn and improve themselves with the mind of creating betterment for all humans as well?

Erik Bjontegard left Norway when he was 18 to study in the UK, then moved on to California. Not realizing until later in life, his actions and behavior, his quests for new discoveries, and his desire to invent followed his father and grandfather on his motherโ€™s side. Now an accomplished inventor, former NASA rocket scientist, deep sea robotics, and submarine explorer, he is now navigating the new Phygital realms connecting the physical and digital.

In this engaging and inspiring autobiography, Bernt โ€œErikโ€ Bjontegard narrates his life filled with the stories of his grandparentsโ€™ sacrifices during WWII, his own mistakes and discoveries, and poses important questions on how to engage the listeners and their families to assist in creating and inventing better human-technology interfaces. Learning from his history, he is embarking on the journey to make his tomorrow better than today.

After graduating Mississippi State and Jackson State Universities, he became a highly specialized Air Traffic Controller, living and working as an international contractor, serving numerous tours in lraq and Afghanistan. Author Spotlight: Rebecca Buttย

Welcome to the TRB Lounge. Today, we are featuring author Rebecca Butt  for her latest release, Lipstick on a Pig: A Memoir.

About The Author

Rebecca Butt

As a young child, Rebecca escaped into books, and wrote happy stories accompanied by bright and cheerful pictures with houses, trees, flowers, and birds, that were a contradiction to her real-life circumstances. Her childhood love for reading and writing endured, and she eventualy wrote and published her short stories and poetry in a literary journal in college. Lipstick on a Pig is her lengthiest writing endeavor.
A licensed Speech Language Pathologist with a master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders, she is the Director of Special Education for a school district in New Hampshire, where she resides.

About the Book

Candid and poignant, humorous and heart-wrenching, in nomadic fashion, the directionless Butt Family chaotically relocated throughout the city of Laconia, New Hampshire, like a ship, adrift and lost at sea without a captain.

Encumbered by night terrors, hauntings, and scraps of memories that spoke to a cruelty beyond her mother, Becky sneakily devoured her way into young adulthood and developed a crippling, yet all too comforting, binge-eating disorder.

Morbidly obese, visited often by a seething presence, and drowning under the smothering symptoms of childhood trauma, Becky is sure sheโ€™s the defective link in her broken family-until her ghost relative provides her a life jacket of hope that may just keep her afloat.

About the Book

Loving & Leaving

Loving & Leaving

The first installment of Jack Lucciโ€™s living memoir, Loving & Leaving spans five years, touching on themes of gratefulness and regret and stories of love for people, places, narcotics, and the effort it takes to sustain that love. Far from stable and rather turbulent, Lucci chronicles his life as he oscillates between hero and anti-hero, sharing lessons learned in the Italian countryside, mistakes made in Americaโ€™s Second City, the angst and constriction of southeastern Washington, and observations on the miserable Oregon coast. adventure that is fast-paced, humorous, and clever.โ€

โ€“ Readers Favorite (5/5 Stars)

โ€œThe nature of the quest amazed me, as it repeatedly tested the questersโ€™ intelligence, resourcefulness, and
daring. Their friendship, love, and the ability to trust each other often determined the outcome. I liked how
they readily made sacrifices for the greater good. The gently blossoming romances completed the young adult story. All in all, I would recommend this engrossing novel to anyone who appreciates science fiction and
fantasy.โ€

About the Book

The Ordeal

After two major floods with their financial, physical, and emotional ramifications, a car accident, several dangerous encounters while traveling and family deaths, I spiraled down into a life-changing, nursing-career ending illness.ย  Diagnosis:ย ย  Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a little understood illness at the time.ย  A single mom, I struggled to work but the symptoms slowly overtook me:ย ย  debilitating fatigue, flu-like symptoms, a pre-leukemic blood dyscrasia and a slow loss of memory.ย  Then a beloved sister and I inherited two estates.ย  She took care of probate.ย  As I descended into the throes of the illness, she invited me to stay with her and her husband.ย  While there, fun times were punctuated by unpleasant encounters and accusations of family neglect and other short comings.ย  Unable to respond due to memory loss and slow thought processes, I kept silent.ย  As probate progressed, my daughter began to warn me about my sisterโ€™s behavior in dealing with the probate issues.ย  I couldnโ€™t comprehend her concerns as I trusted my sister implicitly.ย  I was blissfully unaware of game playing, creative manipulations, plots, thefts and acts of revenge.

Finally, there was some improvement and I returned to work.ย  That attempt failed after only four months.ย  With trepidation I eventually returned to my sisterโ€™s due to her persistent coaxing.ย  While there, she did all she could to make me physically, as well as emotionally, uncomfortable.ย  I left.ย  Once away her behavior became overly hostile and aggressive.ย  She seemed to be a combination of Baby Janeโ€™s sister and Virginia Wolff!ย  My ex-husband, a state policeman, guided me through a two-estate, nine-year ordeal.ย  Julieโ€™s actions would almost financially break me, deprive me of some of my inheritance and cause family members to turn against me.ย

Eventually I had to retain an attorney.ย  He had been a former prosecutor and said it was the worst case he had ever handled.ย  Finally, after trying to deal with her, the attorneys asked me to meet with her.ย  Still ill but with some improvement I pulled myself together.ย  My attempted intervention wasnโ€™t successful.ย  She was evasive, less than honest, accusatory and walked out of the meeting to avoid answering my questions.ย  The lawyers made the decision to hold a judicial inquiry so the judge would know how to rule.ย  Sadly, court would be the next step.

In court the findings influenced the judge to put Julie on supervision to finish the probate business and had her escorted from the parental home and out of town by a Sheriffโ€™s Deputy.ย  He followed her to the next town.ย  My lawyer called it โ€œFrontier Justice.โ€ย  The home was sealed, and contents and home were sold.ย  This final resolution brought peace and financial stability to my life.ย  Estranged family members were reunited with me.

About the Book

Please Feel Bad I’m Dead

Jhaegar Holdburn is a forlorn teenage edgelord who constantly attempts suicide and finds himself continually failing due to last second blunders. His desire for death comes from his often frazzled, often incoherent mind and how it fuels the way heโ€™s ostracized by his peers as well as how heโ€™s been made a pariah in the current social climate. At last the opportunity arises, Jhaegar manages to commit suicide using a foolproof method, and after years of despair he finally diesโ€ฆ
But not quiteโ€ฆ
Jhaegar is instead resurrectedโ€ฆas he will always be resurrected. He finds the one thing standing in the way of sweet death is his uncanny inability to truly die and that his suicides result in increasingly stranger and psychedelic realities, irreversibly made worse by his ever deteriorating mind. He discovers the only way to break this cycle of death and rebirth is to uncover the real root of his problems and find his own personal sense of happiness, as well as to unravel the esoteric tangle of his own repressed psyche.
But, with his grasp of reality slipping away by the minute, will Jhaegar have time to save himself from his own self-destruction?

Author Spotlight: Dr. Kathy Martone

Welcome to TRB Lounge. Today, we are featuring authorย Kathy Martoneย on The Reading Bud for her upcoming book Victorian Songlight: The Birthings Of Magic & Mystery.

About The Author

Dr. Kathy Martone

Dr. Kathy Martone is currently an author and artist living in a small Victorian town in the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas.ย  She and her husband also manage two small BnBโ€™s in their charming turn of the century village.

Before retiring in 2015, Dr. Martone was a Jungian psychologist in private practice specializing in dream work, womenโ€™s spirituality and shamanic journeys.  Prior to this, she was the director of a small mental health clinic and then she served as company psychologist for Southwestern Bell Telephone.  She taught classes at Colorado Free University, The Jungian Ministries International, Naropa University, and Iliff School of Theology.  For the past 35 years she has studied with Richmond K. Greene, past chair of the New York Jungian Institute.

The magical world of dreams has fascinated and intrigued Kathy for as long as she can remember. Inspired by a dream in 2005, she began making velvet tapestries imprinted with the image of one of her own dream figures and embellished with ribbons, rhinestones, feathers, glass beads, Swarovski crystals, antique jewelry and semi-precious stones.  As a Jungian psychologist and shamanic practitioner, energy and depth of meaning are very important to her.  So frequently she will accent the tapestries with symbolic objects, such as old pieces of jewelry, the lining from a purse that belonged to her grandmother, or a piece of ribbon she wore as a little girl.  Layering these materials into a meaningful image evokes for her the multi-layered realms of dreams, myth and metaphor.  Like the magical nets of ancient shamans, these colorful tapestries ensnare the features of her dream spirits as they stare back at her from their watery dimensions.  Her work has been displayed in galleries in Denver, Colorado  as well as in Eureka Springs, Arkansas

In 2006 Dr. Martone self published her first book titled, Sacred Wounds: A Love Story.  The book chronicles the authorโ€™s relentless quest for self understanding and provides a blueprint for other seekers who are looking for spiritual enlightenment while grappling with painful life experiences.  Written in easy to understand language, the book explains how various spiritual and psychological practices were brought together in an alchemical blend to produce a potion of timeless healing.  Weaving its way through such healing practices as psychotherapy, shamanism, Buddhism, Jungian thought and dream work, the reader is given a clear map for psychological and spiritual change.

Essays and short stories written by Dr. Martone have been published inย eMerge, an online magazine published by The Writerโ€™s Colony at Dairy Hollow.ย  In addition, some of her writings have also appeared in two anthologies titledย Dairy Hollow Echoย andย Not Dead Yet 2.

My Dream Catcherย Story

by Christy J. Breedlove

It all started here. This iconic item, which is rightfully ingrained in Indian lore, is a dream symbol respected by the culture that created it. It is mystifying, an enigma that that prods the imagination. Legends about the dream catcher are passed down from multiple tribes. There are variations, but the one fact that can be agreed upon is that it is a nightmare entrapment device, designed to sift through evil thoughts and images and only allow pleasant and peaceful dreams to enter into consciousness of the sleeper.

I wondered what would happen to a very ancient dream catcher that was topped off with dreams and nightmares. What if the nightmares became too sick or deathly? What if the web strings could not hold anymore visions? Would the dream catcher melt, burst, vanish, implode? I reasoned that something would have to give if too much evil was allowed to congregate inside of its structure. I found nothing on the Internet that offered a solution to this problemโ€”I might have missed a relevant story, but nothing stood out to me. Stephen King had a story called Dream Catcher, but I found nothing in it that was similar to what I had in mind. So I took it upon myself to answer such a burning question. Like too much death on a battlefield could inundate the immediate location with lost and angry spirits, so could a dream catcher hold no more of its fill of sheer terror without morphing into something else, or opening up a lost and forbidden existence. What would it be like to be caught up in another world inside the webs of a dream catcher, and how would you get out? What would this world look like? How could it be navigated? What was the source of the exit, and what was inside of it that threatened your existence? Screamcatcher: Web World, the first in the series, was my answer. I can only hope that I have done it justice. You can be the judge of that.

Author Spotlight: Erin Rhew

Welcome to TRB Lounge, the part of TRB that helps authors and publishers promote their titles. Today, we are featuring Erin Rhew, author ofย The Transhuman Project,ย for the Author Spotlight feature.

About The Author

Erin Rhew is an editor, the operations manager for a small press, and a YA fantasy and sci-fi author. Since she picked up Morris the Moose Goes to School at age four, she has been infatuated with the written word. She went on to work as a grammar and writing tutor in college and is still teased by her family and friends for being a member of the “Grammar Police.”

A Southern girl by blood and birth, Erin spent years in a rainy pocket of the Pacific Northwest before returning to her roots in the land of hushpuppies, sweet tea, and pig pickinโ€™. Sheโ€™s married to fellow author, the amazingly talented (and totally handsome) Deek Rhew, and spends her time writing side-by-side with him under the watchful eye of their patient-as-a-saint writing assistant, a tabby cat named Trinity. Erin and Deek enjoy taking long walks, drinking coffee, lifting, boxing, eating pizza, staying up late into the night talking, and adventuring together.

About The Book

When a video of Molly Richards is taken out of context and goes viral, sheโ€™s thrust into the upper echelons of social media stardom and becomes an overnight success in a country where Life Channel ratings reign supreme. As Kadarโ€™s fastest-rising celebrity, her life becomes a media circus, a show put on for the shallow national audience salivating for the next new thing.

But in a world where image is king, danger and death hide among the shadows. In the nearby country of Pacifica, the brutal Caezar turns his citizens into robotic weapons who infiltrate Kadar as sleeper transhumans. They walk among the populace, unaware they are pawns in the madmanโ€™s personal arsenal.

Only Molly, her friends, and an elite group of Kadarian fighters known as the Cyber Knights fully understand the transhuman threat, and only they can break the Caezar’s terrorist grip on both Pacifica and Kadar. Battling Fire Bots and humanoid agents, they seek to put a stop to the Caezar’s tyranny by unraveling the secrets buried between layers of deception.

And they have to do it all while smiling and waving for the cameras.

As Molly and her friends peer behind the glitz and glamour, they discover something more frightening and more sinister than anything theyโ€™ve encountered yet…the truth.

Author Spotlight: Dwayne gill

Welcome to TRB Lounge, the part of TRB that helps authors and publishers promote their titles. Today, we are featuringย Dwayne Gill, author ofย Written By Blood: Conviction,ย for one of our very popular feature, Author Spotlight.

About The Author

Dwayne Gill is a new, up-and-coming author with a big imagination. He first thought of the premise of his series “Written By Blood” when he was just twelve years old. Growing up, he loved action movies and larger-than-life heroes, which is evident when reading his writing.
However, as he got older, he became bothered by the typical action figure tropes and the predictability of the plots, causing his series idea to evolve further.

If you like action thrillers, unlikely, conflicted heroes, twists, and character development that has a much deeper moral than most other thrillers in its genre, you’ll want to follow the series “Written By Blood.”

The two short stories, “Cane’s Detour” and “Daniel’s Darkness” feature Cane and Daniel, two major characters in his series “Written By Blood.” The first novel of the series, Conviction, will be released in December 2018.

Dwayne Gill lives in Louisiana with his wife, newborn son, and his yellow Labrador Retriever.

About The Book

Abandoned to a secret government program at birth, Cane was trained to be the worldโ€™s most skilled assassin. For years he excelled in the field, bringing dangerous terrorists all over the world to justice and making even the most protected villains lose sleep. But since the program was shut down four years ago, heโ€™s been forced into hiding, doing odd jobs to keep himself busy, and struggling to find a place for himself in society. The years of social isolation and, seemingly, his own brutal nature, have made him question whether or not he possesses the ability to feel certain emotions that most others exhibit effortlessly.

Caneโ€™s only hope of normality in a lonely life rests in the warmth of his friendship with Helen and her daughter Kristy, the latter of whom he rescued five years earlier, from the clutches of the evil Blue Rose serial-killer. Cane lives with his friend Lynks, with whom he served in the disbanded โ€œRed Deltaโ€ assassin program.

Cane finds a cryptic message from Marcene, a mysterious lady who knows more about him than she should. He soon finds himself thrust into the middle of a mystery thatโ€™s been at the center of the countryโ€™s attention for the past several years: ordinary men around the United States have been disappearing by the thousands, leaving their families and careers behind, only to turn up elsewhere in the country. Even more curious are the markings, which look like tattoos, that each bear upon their return. Conspiracy theories have abounded for years, but little has ever been known about these men, until now. Marcene claims the missing men are not only dangerous terrorists plotting a major attack on U.S. soil, but that theyโ€™re also genetically enhanced, and she aims to prove it to Cane through a series of instructions.

First, Cane is to save a college girl named Natalie, who, without her knowledge, is being targeted by the marked men. Guided more by curiosity than information, Cane and Lynks agree to help the girl, but after succeeding, they find only a new web of mysteries to unravel. The marked men are receiving their orders from seven dangerous men, and Cane remembers one of them by name: Amos. Heโ€™d been on Caneโ€™s radar in the past, though he remained out of reach. Amosโ€™s re-emergence gives Cane added motivation, so he looks to Marcene to continue pointing him in the right direction…

She leads them to the next, and most important step: find and recruit Daniel, a mountain of a man with a long history of violence.

Thereโ€™s only one problem: heโ€™s a convicted murderer in a super-max prison.

Cane and Lynks enlist Calvin, Danielโ€™s old friend, and Bowman, the man who trained Cane, to help orchestrate a plan for extracting Daniel. But Amos and the marked men are watching and making plans of their own, and theyโ€™ll use any tactic available in order to ensure their sinister plans remain in place, including hurting the few people Cane cares about.

Itโ€™s not only the marked men hot on their trail; FBI Agents Hart and Barkley, whoโ€™ve been hunting Cane and Lynks since the dissolution of Red Delta, are getting closer as well. But the nearer they draw to Cane, the more they learn about Amos, the other six terrorist leaders, and the marked men. And what they discover leads to even more terrifying scenarios and a deeper web of corruption than anyone expected, including a conspiracy involving high-ranking U.S. officials and the Russian government.

If Cane can just save Daniel and set him free, heโ€™ll have a valuable ally: Daniel stands over seven feet tall and weighs over four hundred pounds, and he has his own bitter history with the marked men.

What started as curiosity for Cane quickly turns into something personal when Amos targets Helen and Kristy, sending him on a frantic race against time, pitted against enemies that far outnumber him and his friends. Itโ€™ll be a struggle to balance saving Kristy, rescuing Daniel, all while battling his own demons and self-doubt.

To succeed, itโ€™ll take determination.

Itโ€™ll take focus.

Itโ€™ll take CONVICTION.
