Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Vendetta, the third volume in T. V. Holiday’s Legend of the Iron Warrior series, is an emotionally intense superhero fantasy that combines spiritual warfare, violent spectacle, public humiliation and a deeply personal crisis of faith. Two years after nearly being consumed by darkness, Travis Holiday has largely withdrawn from his role as the Iron Warrior. He wants to leave Carnage Coast, reunite with his son and build a life with Crystal and Ashley, but the Seventh City refuses to release him. His belief in God remains intact, yet his confidence in religion, obedience and the purpose of his calling has fractured.

At the centre of the novel is Candace Loveless, whose vendetta against Travis is far more psychological than physical. She abducts and brutalises victims whose lives reflect different parts of Travis’s past, forcing him to confront his wrestling history, military identity, anger, shame and perceived hypocrisies. Candace does not simply want to kill the Iron Warrior; she wants to expose him as a fraud, make him renounce his faith and dismantle the heroic image the city has built around him. Her cruelty is unforgivable, but the novel gives her motives disturbing depth by tracing them back to grief, abuse, religious coercion and public humiliation.

Travis remains the book’s strongest character because he is never presented as a flawless hero. He is angry, exhausted, defensive and extremely uncertain about whether he still deserves the mantle he carries. His conversations with Mike, Ashley and Crystal explore faith, ego, divine purpose, religious plurality and the difficulty of distinguishing genuine conviction from self-deception. Crystal is particularly effective as his emotional coach, helping him understand that Candace’s greatest advantage is not power, but her ability to identify and weaponise his hidden wounds.

The supporting cast gives the story considerable emotional and thematic breadth. Leslie and Johnny’s subplot, centred on trauma, marriage, pregnancy and the question of whether heroism is compatible with parenthood, is especially moving. Rebecca’s leadership is tested by the increasingly divided group, while Rainstorm becomes a troubling example of how a champion can become dangerous while remaining convinced of his own righteousness. Hicks’s personal connection to Candace adds further emotional weight and raises the stakes beyond a conventional battle between heroes and villains.

The final act is highly cinematic, bringing together Candace’s staged arena, Crystal’s captivity, the villains’ elaborate traps and the revelation of the Archangel, Travis’s supernatural counterpart. The confrontation works because it is both physical and symbolic: Travis is fighting not just another enemy, but a version of himself shaped by weakness, resentment and corruption. His victory is significant, yet the conclusion refuses to offer easy certainty, leaving him victorious but spiritually unsettled.

The novel is ambitious, dramatic and sincere, though it is sometimes overextended. Its large cast, repeated arguments, theological debates and frequent action sequences occasionally slow the pace, while some of the emotional exposition could have been more restrained. Even so, Vendetta stands out for treating heroic identity as both a gift and a burden, and for recognising that the most dangerous enemy may be the self one fears becoming.
