Seven Serpents Assembled is an unforgettable, macabre thrill ride that masterfully fuses the gritty tension of a Spaghetti Western with the visceral dread of cosmic dark fantasy. It is a poetic, hyper-violent exploration of trauma, greed, and the heavy price of survival that will sink its fangs into your skull and never let go.

Seven Serpents Assembled by Seth Hobbs is an expansive weird-Western grimdark fantasy that combines frontier adventure, black-powder violence, dystopian technology, religious corruption and supernatural horror within the established world of Sendya. The principal narrative follows Haggins “Hard Bargain” Daggerbie and his fellow criminals after their release from Ecstasy Bay Prison. A violently extracted clue sends the gang westwards in search of Marigold Morningcane, a young woman whose tattoo may lead them to a legendary cache of stolen government treasure. Unknown to them, their former leader, Sunblade “Brisket” Riverrustler, has survived a staged execution and is pursuing the same prize.

The novel’s strongest point is the sheer scale and eccentricity of its world-building. Sendya feels like a distorted industrial frontier in which revolvers, railways, primitive motor vehicles and dynomium technology coexist with monstrous creatures, occult systems, religious schisms and the ruins of earlier civilisations. The included maps help orient readers within this enormous setting, particularly as the story moves from the urban East through Red Boulder Desert and into the largely uncharted Far West. Author Hobbs supplies the world with its own religions, political institutions, drugs, weapon manufacturers, slang and historical calamities, creating a setting that is unmistakably his own rather than a lightly modified version of the American West.

Hard Bargain is the closest thing the novel offers to a central antihero. He is intelligent, reflective and increasingly conscious of age, loss and the consequences of his past, but he remains a dangerous criminal capable of cruelty and opportunistic violence. This tension gives him more depth than the other members of his gang, whose memorable nicknames and grotesque personalities make them easy to distinguish. Brisket, in particular, is written as an almost elemental embodiment of brutality. His appalling actions leave no room for romanticising outlaw life, while his relentless pursuit of the others generates much of the novel’s tension.

Marigold provides the narrative’s most sympathetic and emotionally difficult perspective. Trapped within the desert settlement of Aspiring Peak, she is exploited by Journey, a self-appointed prophet who combines occult knowledge, manipulation and practical leadership to maintain authority over his followers. Her resistance to both Journey and her complicit mother gives the novel a powerful thread concerning coercive control, institutionalised abuse and the ways charismatic leaders transform fear into devotion. The confrontation between Marigold’s desire for autonomy and the numerous men who regard her as a muse, vessel, bargaining tool or treasure map is among the book’s most meaningful concerns.

The novel is deliberately extreme, however, and its excesses will sharply divide readers. The violence is graphic and frequent, while the narrative includes sexual abuse, exploitation of minors, torture, misogyny, racism, animal cruelty and the murder of children. These elements establish the moral ugliness of the setting, but their repetition can become numbing rather than increasingly shocking. The prose is also highly expansive with extended backstories, political explanations, philosophical digressions and repeated descriptions of bodies, weapons and depravity that frequently slow the westward journey. A substantial tightening would improve momentum and allow the major deaths, betrayals and revelations to carry greater emotional force.

Nevertheless, Seven Serpents Assembled is an ambitious and uncompromising work whose appeal lies in its grotesque imagination, morally compromised ensemble and unusually detailed frontier mythology. It is best suited to experienced grimdark readers who appreciate sprawling narratives populated almost entirely by predators, opportunists and damaged survivors. Beneath the profanity and carnage, the novel raises serious questions about freedom, culpability, false prophecy and whether people shaped by violence can ever become anything other than another form of serpent.
