Interview

Welcome to TRB! Please give our readers a brief introduction about yourself before we begin. (We’d love to know beyond what your Author Bio says about you.)

Iโ€™ve always been obsessed with the big questions: What is life? What is death? Where has humanity been? Where is humanity going? I think these are important questions. And I think every piece of our day-to-day lives โ€“ every struggle, every accomplishment, every pleasure, every pain โ€“ itโ€™s all part of a story, a story thatโ€™s been going on for thousands of centuries. And itโ€™s a crazy story, but I want to understand that story and appreciate it as much as possible. Thatโ€™s why I read and write. The more I learn about humanity and its long, complicated story, the more I learn about myself and how I fit into that story.

Beyond the official blurb, could you offer us a unique insight or a behind-the-scenes glimpse into your book?

In my book, Bell Tower, there is a magical meditation called Solosis. Solosis is a soul-to-soul osmosis. Hereโ€™s how it works: Two people face each other. Then they say a sacred phrase. As soon as they say it, one personโ€™s entire life flows through the other person. It only takes nine seconds, but after those nine seconds, those two people understand each other โ€“ their strengths, their weaknesses, their flaws, their wounds. After nine seconds, they can heal each other in profound ways.

Every book has a starting point. What was the spark or pivotal moment that inspired you to write this one?

In my early twenties, I went through a phase where I was fascinated by bell towers. I thought they were noble structures. Every time I heard one or looked at one, I imagined a more meaningful world, where the sound of the bells would wake us and remind us of whatโ€™s truly important, which, in my opinion, is each other.ย

Is there a core message or theme in your book that you wish readers to discover?

Yes. You have one short life on this planet. Use it to relate to other people, to discover inner peace, and to achieve great things. Donโ€™t waste it on distractions.

Of all the characters in your book, do you have a personal favourite? What makes them

Hugo is my favorite character. He has a dark, twisted past and heโ€™s been through weird, awful things, but he still gravitates towards good values. He seeks wisdom in the ancient past.

How do you approach character development, ensuring they resonate with readers and feel authentic?

When I think of characters, I think of wants/desires and flaws/wounds. I think of whatโ€™s holding them back and where they want to go. These are basic yet powerful forces that all of us can recognize in each other.

What was the inspiration for this book? Was it an idea, an anecdote, a dream, or something else?

The June of 1985 cover of National Geographic featured an Afghan girl with piercing green eyes. When I was 23, I saw that cover of National Geographic. I saw those eyes. And they stirred something inside of me. They wanted me to tell a story about eye-contact, about empathy, about demanding the best of the human spirit.ย

How long did it take you to write this particular book?

I wrote many drafts over many years. The final draft took about six months.

Are you working on any other stories presently?

Iโ€™m brainstorming another near-future fiction story. But I also want to get some short stories out there.

Why have you chosen this genre? Or do you write in multiple genres?

I have a wild imagination. Science fiction, fantasy, and magical realism allow me to blur the lines between whatโ€™s real and what could be real.

When did you decide to become a writer? Was it easy for you to follow your passion, or did you have to make some sacrifices along the way? (Feel free to share your story; we love hearing author stories!)

Growing up, I wrote a lot of short stories, poetry, love letters. When I was 17, I decided I wanted to write books. The biggest sacrifice Iโ€™ve had to make is headspace. In my free time, Iโ€™m always daydreaming about my stories and my characters. Sometimes I wish I could use some of that headspace for more practical things, like learning new recipes. My wife loves my imagination, but Iโ€™m sure she wouldnโ€™t mind if I learned how to cook a roast.ย ย

What is your writing ritual? How do you do it?

I go for walks. I visualize a scene from beginning to middle to end. Once I have it perfectly pictured in my mind, I pour it onto the page as fast as I can.

Editing can be a gruelling process. How do you approach revisions and self-editing?

For me, editing is asymptotic. I know Iโ€™ll never achieve perfection, but I must get as close to it as possible. A lot of times, that means obsessing over a paragraph or even a sentence. I often tell myself, โ€œAgain. Again. Again. Better. Better. Better.โ€

With the rise of audiobooks and multimedia experiences, have you considered exploring these avenues for your stories?

Yes. My book has a lot of lively characters and lively dialogue. If there were an audiobook with a different voice for each character, I think that would be really cool. My book is also very visual. Readers tell me it reads like a movie, so yes, a film adaptation would be awesome.

Lastly, if you were to describe your writing style in three words, what would they be?

Vivid, vibrant, stirring.

How do you prefer to writeโ€”computer/laptop, typewriter, dictation, or longhand with a pen?

I brainstorm ideas and outline scenes with pen and paper. When itโ€™s time to actually write the scene, I use my laptop.

What are your 5 favourite books? (You can share 5 favourite authors too.)

  1. Ishmael by Daniel Quinn
  2. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
  3. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
  4. The Giver by Lois Lowry
  5. Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen

How do you deal with Writerโ€™s Block?

I donโ€™t. For me, writing is a seasonal process. Some months, the ideas are gushing and flowing. Other months, my brain is all dried up. And I think thatโ€™s a very natural thing. When I look at a scraggily tree in the dead of winter, I donโ€™t think the tree is lazy or unproductive. Itโ€™s just dormant. And thatโ€™s okay. Itโ€™s good to have cycles of creativity and dormancy.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Know whatโ€™s tried and true, but try whatโ€™s weird and new.

Thank you, author Pond, for taking the time to answer our questions and for all your insightful and interesting answers!

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Slow Space by Lucian Phillips is an ambitious, thought-provoking book about a future shaped by corporate dominance, artificial intelligence, and space exploration. At its core, this is a hard science fiction novel that asks big questionsโ€”about power, humanity, and what it means to truly be free. And while it leans heavily into its world-building and scientific elements, it never loses sight of the personal struggles of its main characters.

The novel follows three protagonistsโ€”Brax Bratton, a socially awkward genius physicist; Luis Briggs, a determined but disadvantaged boy who dreams of captaining a space vessel; and Jess Weston, a woman who finds herself at the mercy of corporate greed but forms an unlikely alliance with an AI. Their stories are interlaced together in a way that feels vast as well as intimate, with each of them facing challenges that ultimately shape the course of human history.

One of the bookโ€™s biggest strengths is its ability to balance the technical with the emotional. The science is detailed and well-researched, but it never overshadows the emotional element. Author Phillips does an excellent job of making even the most complex concepts feel accessible, and the philosophical themes, particularly the exploration of AIโ€™s role in human society, are engaging without being overly didactic.

That said, the book does have a tendency to get lost in its own depth at times. Some sections feel a bit drawn out, with long passages of exposition that slow the pacing. Readers who love intricate world-building and scientific accuracy will love these details.

Still, Slow Space is an impressive and rewarding read. Itโ€™s the kind of book that lingers in your mind, filled with thought-provoking ideas and richly drawn characters. Fans of hard sci-fi and speculative fiction will find a lot to love here. It may not be for everyone, but for those willing to take the journey, itโ€™s a fascinating ride.

With time running out and his last days close at hand, Deveric must determine if he’ll be able to find Karness before it’s too late.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Sometimes, the simplest premises can hold the deepest emotional weight, and The King’s Pen Pal by Peter Osterlund proves just that. This is a beautifully written tale of longing, legacy, and the need to truly live before time runs out.

At its heart, The King’s Pen Pal is the story of King Deveric, a ruler bound by duty and sickness, whose only escape comes through letters exchanged with a mysterious pen pal, Karness. As his illness worsens and his days are numbered, Deveric makes a daring decision, to shed his title, leave the walls of his castle, and experience the kingdom heโ€™s ruled but never truly known. With the help of his trusted sorcerer, Geris, he embarks on a journey that is as heartwarming as it is bittersweet.

Author Osterlundโ€™s prose is fluid and immersive, effortlessly pulling the reader into Devericโ€™s world. The banter between the king and Geris adds humor and warmth, making their companionship one of the bookโ€™s strongest elements. Devericโ€™s letters to Karness are particularly moving, revealing his deepest regrets, dreams, and desires in a way that makes their connection feel realistic and personal.

The novel beautifully balances introspection with adventure, blending fantasy elements seamlessly into its character-driven narrative. The worldbuilding is understated but effective, allowing the reader to focus on the emotional depth of the story rather than being overwhelmed with lore.

If I had to nitpick, the pacing in the middle slows down a bit, and I wished for a slightly deeper exploration of Karness’ character beyond her role as an unseen anchor for Devericโ€™s journey. However, these are minor quibbles in an otherwise moving and heartfelt novel.

For readers who love stories of self-discovery, poignant friendships, and a touch of magic, The King’s Pen Pal is a memorable story worth reading. Itโ€™s a beautiful book that stays with you, reminding us all to embrace life before itโ€™s too late.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Bell Tower by Raphael Pond is one of those books that seamlessly blends near-future dystopian elements with philosophical introspection, creating a story that lingers long after you finish the book. Itโ€™s a bold, high-concept novel that explores the intersection of technology, consciousness, and the power of connectionโ€”while keeping the reader thoroughly entertained.

At its heart, the novel follows Sasha Sumzer, a meditation teacher with a hidden agenda, who seeks to dismantle Axiom, a powerful social media giant that has entrenched itself in peopleโ€™s daily lives through Glow Domesโ€”devices that have replaced traditional smartphones and fundamentally altered human interaction. His mission? To awaken a society trapped in digital sedation and remind them of what it truly means to be present. Alongside him is an ensemble cast of intriguing characters, each caught in the web of modern technology and its insidious grip on free will.

Author Pondโ€™s world-building is brilliant. The Glow Domes feel quiet plausible. They feel like an unsettling next step in our already tech-saturated lives. The idea that people are so plugged into their devices that theyโ€™ve lost the ability to think creatively or meaningfully engage with the world is chilling, yet entirely believable. Sashaโ€™s unique approach adds a fresh and poetic touch to the rebellion against mindless digital consumption.

One of the bookโ€™s greatest strengths is its philosophical depth. It doesnโ€™t just critique social media and corporate overreach; it asks deeper questions about identity, control, and the nature of human experience. Sashaโ€™s meditative techniques and the concept of Solosis introduce a fascinating spiritual aspect that contrasts sharply with the mechanical, algorithm-driven world of Axiom.

That said, the bookโ€™s pacing can be uneven at times. While the philosophical discussions are fascinating, they occasionally slow down the action, making some sections feel a bit dense. Also, Sasha himself, though a compelling character, sometimes feels more like a symbol than a fully realized person. I would have liked to get inside his head more, beyond his mission-driven persona.

But despite these minor quibbles, Bell Tower is a refreshing and thought-provoking read. If youโ€™re a fan of speculative fiction that makes you reflect on the world we live in (think Black Mirror meets The Giver) this book is absolutely worth reading. Raphael Pond delivers a story that challenges, inspires, and might even change the way you look at technology, meditation, and the human mind.

Book Review: The Fossilarchy: It’s a WAR for the WORLD by Tom Clark

Author: Tom Clark

Genre: Climate Fiction, Political Thriller, Speculative Fiction
Format:ย E-bookย
Pages: 394 pages

Blurb:
As the world burns and floods, humanity stares into the abyss of climate apocalypse… but hey, a planet is a small sacrifice for a few more years of profits and executive bonuses.
Meet the Fossilarchy, the fossil fuel industry and its political cronies, cause of the climate crisis, doyen of denial.
All-powerful, it has captured government and nations. Ever-growing, it won’t stop until it has consumed the Earth.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Fossilarchy by Tom Clark is an ambitious, thought-provoking, and intensely relevant novel that plunges headfirst into the intersection of political power, environmental destruction, and activism. Tom Clark crafts a narrative that reads like a high-stakes thriller, yet beneath the surface, it is a scathing critique of the fossil fuel industry and the systems that sustain it.

What stands out most is how Clark brings his themes to life through an electrifying, multi-layered plot. The story unfolds in a near-future world where climate activism has escalated into sabotage and direct attacks on fossil fuel infrastructure. As industries and governments scramble to suppress the resistance, tensions rise to the boiling point. The novel doesnโ€™t shy away from the moral dilemmas at the heart of this struggle: How far should people go to stop an industry that is actively destroying the planet? Can sabotage ever be justified, or does it simply fuel the oppressive mechanisms of the powerful?

The characters, while sometimes more symbolic than deeply nuanced, are engaging in their own ways. Activists, politicians, and corporate titans collide in a game of high-stakes chess, each trying to outmanoeuvre the other. Clark does a great job of highlighting the contradictions within both the movement and the industry, showing how power and corruption seep into every facet of society.

One of the novelโ€™s strongest aspects is its pacing. The story moves quickly, with tension building in each chapter. The writing is clear, and while the exposition can sometimes feel heavy-handed, itโ€™s clear that author Clark is deeply passionate about the subject. The book is not just a call to action, itโ€™s a wake-up call, delivered with all the urgency of a world teetering on the edge.

That being said, The Fossilarchy can sometimes feel more like a manifesto than a novel. While its message is important, some sections are dense with political and economic discourse that might slow the momentum for some readers. The book shines brightest when it lets the narrative drive home its themes rather than spelling them out in long stretches of dialogue or exposition.

Overall, this is a gripping and eye-opening read, perfect for anyone interested in climate activism, political thrillers, or stories that challenge the status quo. Itโ€™s bold, urgent, and not afraid to ask the big questions. While the balance between storytelling and message could be fine-tuned, The Fossilarchy is undeniably compelling and leaves a lasting impression.

Book Review: The Cul-de-sac by Christopher Null

Series:
Genre: Psychological Thriller, Suspense, Dark Fiction
Format:ย E-bookย
Pages: 392 pages

Blurb:
How well do you really know your neighbors?
Veteran serial killer Klaus Fischer is determined that his most recent murder will be his last, but like many retirements, this one isnโ€™t sticking. No one has come close to suspecting heโ€™s buried the victims on his quiet suburban California cul-de-sac propertyโ€”but heโ€™s feeling the urge to kill again, and this time heโ€™s set his sights on a target dangerously close to home.
Widowed Peg Jurgensen has lived on the cul-de-sac for the past fifteen years, and sheโ€™s ready to shed her doldrums and re-enter the world around her. And where better to start than with mothering the curious young teen Eliza van Damal, whose family just moved to the cul-de-sac in order to expose their daughter to a better life.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Cul-de-sac by Christopher Null is an unsettling, slow-burning thriller that takes the classic suburban neighbourhood setting and transforms it into a web of secrets, paranoia, and, yes, murder. With its sharp prose and eerie atmosphere, this book takes readers on a psychological roller coaster through the lives of neighbours who may not be as harmless as they seem.

At the heart of the novel is Klaus Fischer, a veteran serial killer who has successfully hidden his crimes for years, until the itch to kill again proves too strong to resist. But his little cul-de-sac in suburban California is not as quiet as he once thought. Enter Peg Jurgensen, a lonely widow yearning for connection, and Eliza van Damal, a bright but rebellious teen who gets caught in the middle of secrets surrounding her new neighbourhood. These characters, along with a cast of seemingly ordinary residents, create a complex narrative that slowly tightens around the reader like a noose.

The book does a great job of building suspense. The multiple perspectives allow for a deeper understanding of each characterโ€™s motivations and fears, adding layers of tension as the story unfolds. The writing is crisp, the dialogue feels natural, and the pacing is deliberate, slow enough to build dread, yet quick enough to keep you flipping pages.

That said, The Cul-de-sac does have a few elements that may not work for everyone. The narrative takes its time, which means the first half is more about setting up characters and atmosphere rather than immediate action. Readers who enjoy fast-paced thrillers may find this a bit of a slow burn. Additionally, while the bookโ€™s multiple perspectives add depth, they can sometimes slow the momentum, making it feel like some reveals take longer than necessary to unfold.

However, once the pieces start falling into place, the payoff is absolutely worth it. Author Null beautifully builds suspense, and the final act delivers a chilling conclusion that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. If you enjoy psychological thrillers that dig deep into the dark corners of suburbia and human nature, The Cul-de-sac is definitely worth reading.

The long fingers of the Guild reach everywhere, and one overly ambitious thief is all it takes to spark a chain of events that will haunt the world of Baelon for many years to come.
Six Moons, Seven Gods is book one in The Legends of Baelon.

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Every once in a while, a fantasy novel comes along that reminds me why I love the genre. Six Moons, Seven Gods is that book. Robert A. Walker delivers a masterfully woven tale filled with deception, shifting alliances, and a dark, immersive world that immediately pulled me in. With an intricate plot that unfolds like a dangerous game of chess, this book is a perfect blend of intrigue, adventure, and richly developed characters.

From the moment weโ€™re introduced to the Takers Guild and their sinister plans, I knew I was in for a ride. The story quickly escalates, intertwining the fates of thieves, assassins, warriors, and rulers in ways that are unexpected yet brilliantly executed. The prescient woman and her enigmatic daughter add an element of mysticism that keeps the narrative layered and engaging. And then thereโ€™s Rolft Aernsโ€”his return to the palace with a personal vendetta is one of my favorite character arcs in the book. His internal struggles and battle-worn wisdom give the story an emotional weight that balances out the high-stakes action.

What truly stands out is Walkerโ€™s ability to craft tension. The world of Baelon is brimming with corruption, power struggles, and secrets hidden away in every shadow. The pacing is tight, the fight sequences are cinematic, and the dialogue is sharp. Thereโ€™s an almost poetic quality to the prose, making every scene feel immersive. The political machinations, the cunning moves of the Guild, and the betrayals that follow are a testament to how well the story is structured.

If thereโ€™s one thing I love, itโ€™s a fantasy novel that respects its readerโ€™s intelligence, one that doesnโ€™t spoon-feed but instead trusts you to piece together the complicated world the author has presented. Six Moons, Seven Gods does exactly that. Itโ€™s clever, gripping, and utterly absorbing. By the time I turned the last page, I was already eager for the next installment. If you love fantasy with high-stakes storytelling, morally complex characters, and a world that feels alive, this is a must-read!

Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Like Embers in the Night by Andrew Goliszek is a powerful and deeply emotional journey through one of historyโ€™s darkest periods. Set against the backdrop of Stalinโ€™s brutal reign and World War II, the novel follows Janek, a Polish soldier, and his wife, Wanda, as they endure Soviet labor camps, Siberian gulags, and the horrors fo war. After years of separation, they are finally reunited, but survival doesnโ€™t mean escaping the trauma of the past.

Author Goliszekโ€™s ability to immerse readers in history is one of the novelโ€™s greatest strengths. The descriptions of war-torn Poland and the unimaginable conditions of the gulags are gripping and painfully realistic. Itโ€™s clear that the author has done meticulous research, making the historical backdrop feel authentic and visceral. The writing is vivid, and at times, unflinchingly raw, bringing the struggles fo Janek and Wanda to life in a way that is both heartbreaking and inspiring.

What truly stands out, however, is the emotional depth of the story. Janek and Wanda are not just victims of war, they are complex individuals with fears, hopes, and a determination to survive. The novel doesnโ€™t just focus on their suffering but also on their resilience and the emotional toll of trying to build a future after enduring so much. Wandaโ€™s struggles with memory loss in her later years add another layer of poignancy, highlighting the lingering effects of trauma.

That said, the novel can be heavy on historical detail, which, while impressive, occasionally slows the pacing. Some moments could have been more condensed to maintain the flow of the story, especially in the middle sections. However, this doesnโ€™t take away from the bookโ€™s impact.

For fans of historical fiction that doesnโ€™t shy away from the brutal realities of war but also explore the strength of the human spirit, Like Embers in the Night is a compelling read. Itโ€™s a story of survival, love, and the lasting scars of history.

Excerpt

Night was falling as Sibil left the cobblerโ€™s shop. She turned to watch its front door close, managing to wave before the cobblerโ€™s wrinkled face and long leather apron disappeared inside. The small shop was, as the abbot had said, but a short walk from The God of Childrenโ€™s House; she had had no trouble finding it following his directions. The abbot had given her a metal amulet in the shape of a rectangular shield the size of her palm. Its leather thong enabled it to be worn around the neck, but the abbot had told her to present it to the cobbler with one of her motherโ€™s worn shoes upon arrival.

She had done so and, as predicted by the abbot, the cobblerโ€”a kindly old man with a mop of white hairโ€”had simply asked, โ€œHow do you come by this, my dear?โ€

And though it seemed a bit odd to her, she had responded as instructed: โ€œThank you for asking, Master Nash. Father Syrus prays for me.โ€

The cobbler had returned the amulet to her hand, folding her fingers around it. โ€œThen I am at your service, madam. What can I do for you?โ€

When Sibil had explained her predicament, the cobbler had assured her that if she would return on the morrow at sunrise, he would have ready for her mother a pair of new turnshoes made of soft leather goatskin. There would be no charge.

Sibil retraced her steps down a narrow alley as her thoughts returned to her motherโ€™s strange behavior. She had purposely ignored previous impulses to reconstruct the dayโ€™s events, telling herself she had more important things to pursue. She had first focused her energies on finding shelter, and then busied herself with the abbotโ€™s offer of new shoes. Those would help her motherโ€™s immediate plight, no doubt, but the womanโ€™s physical ailments were clearly nothing compared to what was plaguing her mind. Things had not been right with her since Sibilโ€™s father died. And they had gotten progressively worse. It was as though she had drifted away from her old self, and from those she had been close to. Sibil had not had a meaningful conversation with her for almons. There were sparks of life here and there, moments when Sibil dared to hope that her mother might be released from whatever enthralled her, but todayโ€™s events had seriously dashed any such dream. Aloof and withdrawn was bad enough. Now it seemed her mother was drifting from reality as well. Her irrational rants about the king and Sibilโ€™s own safety were a newโ€”

A violent force slammed into Sibilโ€™s shoulder, knocking her sideways and into the alley wall. She lost her footing, falling to one knee, dazed. There was the sound of gravel grating under foot.

โ€œWell now, lass, jest where might you be goinโ€™?โ€

Sibilโ€™s heartbeat quickened. She should have known not to take the alley. It was dark, but not so dark that she could not make out the shape of a tall man standing over her. She could smell him as well. Suddenly, he grabbed her by the hair and yanked her head toward his crotch.

Sibil still held the amulet. Instinctively, she drove it as hard as she could up between the manโ€™s legs. He gasped and released her hair.

โ€œBitch!โ€ The man reached once more for her, but Sibil had already drawn her arm back. She struck him again with the amulet, in the same spot, only this time with more purchase and resolve. โ€œAgh!โ€ Too late, the man struggled to shield his privates.

Sibil stood, dropping the amulet as she reached frantically for the dagger beneath her coat. Her fingers trembled as they curled tightly around its hilt. She brandished the blade menacingly, panting as she sought to ward off her attacker.

โ€œBitch!โ€ The man drew his own, much larger, knife. He lunged as Sibil turned and ran straight into the arms of an even larger man she had not seen approaching from the other end of the alley. She tried to push away, but already he had wrapped a strong arm around her, pinning both of hers and lifting her off her feet. Still holding her, the big man grabbed her oncoming assailant with his other arm and threw him headfirst against the alley wall.

Sibil squirmed, but the big man held her tightly with one arm. With the other, he pried the dagger from her hand.

โ€œIโ€™m going to let you go now. No further harm will come to you.โ€

Sibil found herself standing on her own, unsure of what to think. The big man held her dagger by the blade and offered it to her. โ€œTake it and be off.โ€

Whatโ€™s happening? Sibil hesitated before instinct overrode all else. With another surge of adrenaline coursing through her veins, she snatched her knife and ran.

Excerpt

Slumped almost lifelessly against the tufts of her chair, Wanda stared out an open window overlooking a lovely garden. Warm August rains had colored the grounds with a sea of vibrant flowers, their scent filling her room like a bouquet, though she barely noticed. Occasionally, even the most insignificant events would trigger memories from a time long gone: a soft whisper, a faint smell, the delicate warmth of a childโ€™s breath against her face, the soothing melody of a Mozart sonata. It was at those moments that Wanda would waken from her darkness and, with a look of fear spreading across her face, remember her family in Radom, who had no idea that a hundred miles south, the skies rained gray with the ashes of a thousand souls. On most days, they hardly detected the grainy soot around them, or even witnessed an evening sunset because the five incinerators in Auschwitz burned bodies day and night. Before long, everyone in Radom simply got used to itโ€”a lingering grit that filled the air and settled upon the smallest things: a blade of grass, a delicate flower, a pat of butter spread on toast, a tongue that flicked unconsciously to rid itself of a strange and fleshy taste that hours earlier had been someoneโ€™s husband or wife.

Wandaโ€™s memories these days came in and out, bubbling to the surface, then vanishing as if someone had reached in and wiped them away. On especially bad days, her world was a blank slate. No parents or grandparents to remember. No children or grandchildren to bring joy into her life. Not even a husband to keep her warm at night as she slept. The good sisters of Saint Francis who ran the Catholic nursing home tried as best they could to ease the bouts of anger and depression that overcame her. It didnโ€™t help that Wanda, afflicted with worsening dementia, had, on some days, reverted to speaking Polish to everyone around her.

That particular day in early August started out as a good one. Perked up and searching the room for anything familiar, her eyes sparkled as she caught glimpses of happier days, but suddenly turned despondent when she remembered the day sheโ€™d seen her beloved Janek for the last time. He was eighty-six years old when she walked into his hospital room in Pensacola, Floridaโ€”a gentle shadow of a man with a Polish accent, a kind but stoic face, and such remarkable stories of love and suffering and war that theyโ€™d forever changed the way his children and grandchildren looked at life. The few friends he had knew him as John, but he preferred Janek, one of the few reminders he had of his beloved Poland. His hazel eyes, so animated they seemed to dance, would glisten with tears whenever he spoke of what his wife and daughter had endured in the brutal labor camps of Siberia; and it was at those moments when Janekโ€™s eyes would harden and expose the very depths of his soul.

Wanda remembered that morning like it was yesterday, picturing the ventilator tube snaked down his throat, his frail chest rising and falling to the rhythm of oxygen that kept his heart from stopping until his family could all gather and say goodbye for the last time, staring at his ashen face as she thought back to a life that most people would find unimaginable. Her bony fingers clenched as if holding onto something precious, she looked at a small painting of the Virgin Mary, then glanced around the stark room. Something familiar pervaded the silence. She felt alone, as she did on most days, though she rarely knew it or even cared, until her memory suddenly returned and she would whisper, โ€œJanek. Where are you, my love?โ€

For the entire minute she was lucid, Wanda remembered pressing Janekโ€™s cold hand into hers, thinking that he had no business being alive; that his children and grandchildren should not have been born; that whoseverโ€™s life heโ€™d ever touched or changed, made better or worse because of his existence on earth, would be as different as night and day. And that whatever heโ€™d done in his next forty-six years, whatever contributions heโ€™d made, significant or not, would have vanished like dust in the wind were it not for the fateful day heโ€™d risked his life and walked to freedom while twenty-five thousand other Polish soldiers marched in lockstep to Stalinโ€™s execution order and on to their graves in the Katyn Forest.

Over the years, Wanda had heard the tragic story of Stalinโ€™s Katyn Massacre and the Polish soldiers executed and thrown into mass graves where they lay buried and forgotten for decades. Though sheโ€™d never spoken of it herself, and it pained her to listen to Janekโ€™s heart wrenching tales of war, sheโ€™d accepted that, for him, it was cathartic. But as she grew older, and because sheโ€™d experienced more pain in seven years than most women would suffer in a lifetime, she prohibited even a mention of anything Russian, especially when Janek would describe a time in history when hell, in all its fury, had made its home on earth.

Wandaโ€™s Poland, with a population of only thirty-five million, was the only Allied nation that fought in World War II from the opening salvos of Nazi occupation and Russiaโ€™s invasion in 1939 until Germanyโ€™s surrender a week after Adolf Hitler had committed suicide in 1945. For its size, no other nation on earth had given as much or had suffered more than Poland: millions sent to gulags or deported to labor camps in Kazakhstan and the frigid regions of Siberia; millions more exterminated in concentration camps dotted across the Polish landscape; countless men, women, and children starved, tortured, murdered, and worked to death simply because they were Poles. By the time the war ended, its population had been reduced by at least ten million. To survive six years of the two most brutal regimes in modern history was not only unlikely, it was truly a miracle. But amongst the ashes and smoldering ruins, broken lives and unspeakable horrors of war, miracles did happen; survivors whoโ€™d lived to tell their children of war and gulags, of victors and unlikely heroes, trying in vain to forget the shocking cruelty of a world that had taken everything they had from them, living their lives in the shadows as if no one else in the world cared. Itโ€™s said that these heroes are like embers in the night, glowing brilliantly in the darkest moments of history, forever changing the course of humanity, and then, just as suddenly, vanishing as distant memories fade and the world forgets what ordinary men and women did when hope was gone and all seemed lost. Wanda and Janek were two of those seemingly ordinary people, and on that day and at that moment in Sandusky, Ohio, Wanda remembered.
